Feeling the need to escape the pressures of daily life, we explore the camping and lodging choices at Binna Burra Lodge in the Gold Coast Hinterlands.

Research conducted by the New York Times has brought to light the issue of “nature deficit disorder,” a term that emphasizes the importance of spending time outdoors for our well-being. However, do we really need studies to prove that camping in nature is a rejuvenating experience? Isn’t it clear that our mental and physical health benefit from disconnecting from the urban hustle and bustle?

So, in pursuit of maintaining our sanity, we headed to the mountains. Where exactly? I’m glad you asked. We set out to Binna Burra Camping Ground in the Gold Coast Hinterlands for some much-needed relaxation.

Binna Burra Lodge – a brief history

You can find Binna Burra Camping Grounds nestled within the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, situated 800 meters above sea level in the Lamington National Park. As you may already know, the serene Hinterlands are a highlight of the Gold Coast, making camping at Binna Burra an exceptional choice.

Established in 1933 by Arthur Groom and Romeo Lahey, who were key members of the National Parks Association of Queensland, Binna Burra Lodge was created with the vision of providing a place where visitors could immerse themselves in the beauty of the Lamington National Park rainforest. By acquiring the last freehold property on the park’s boundary, they established a public company to finance what eventually became Binna Burra Mountain Lodge.

Tragically, on September 8, 2019, Binna Burra was ravaged by the Black Summer bushfires, resulting in the destruction or damage of many of the historically significant buildings. After a 12-month closure, Binna Burra Lodge reopened proudly, boasting newly renovated camping grounds, safari tents, and state-of-the-art facilities.

Rainforest Camping Ground at Binna Burra

The camping grounds at Binna Burra Lodge are conveniently situated right at the entrance of the Lamington National Park. These grounds are in close proximity to various walking trails, making them a perfect choice for nature enthusiasts. They are suitable for smaller RVs and tent campers, but I advise against bringing large rigs due to the challenging mountain road leading to the grounds.

There are three types of campsites available at Binna Burra Camping Ground/Lodge:

  • Small vehicle/caravan sites
  • Swag sites
  • Tent sites

Regardless of the chosen campsite, visitors can enjoy amenities such as hot showers, flush toilets, a coin-operated laundry, communal fire pits, cooking shelters, BBQ facilities, and a central shelter equipped with a microwave and refrigerator. However, guests are required to bring their own utensils, cutlery, and dishes.

Additionally, there is a nearby cafe, restaurant, bar, and complimentary parking available.

Small caravan/vehicle camping at Binna Burra Lodge – $43 per night

A limited number of powered drive-on sites are available for smaller vehicles under 6.5 meters in length. These sites are all level and accommodating. During our visit, we saw small to medium-sized motorhomes, rooftop tents, compact caravans, and camper trailers enjoying the camping facilities at Binna Burra Lodge. The sites are well demarcated to ensure a private camping experience.

These sites offer 15-amp power, but they are not drive-through, so campers should be comfortable with reversing their vehicle. An added perk is the presence of a Tesla EV charging station at the campgrounds.

Swag campsites and tent camping at Binna Burra Lodge – $25 to $35 per night

The swag and tent camping sites at Binna Burra are set on level ground or raised platforms within the enchanting forest surroundings. These sites are not accessible by vehicles, so be prepared to transport your tent, swag, and equipment on foot. Fear not, as the distance from the loading area to your designated spot is short and manageable. The sites are clearly marked and well-spaced.

No power is provided at the swag and tent camping sites.

Alternate accommodations at Binna Burra

If you desire to rid yourself of nature deficiency at Binna Burra but prefer not to endure the hardships of camping, then you will adore the Safari Tents. These tents require you to bring your own pillows, sheets, and blankets and are arranged terrace-style, offering spectacular views of the Gold Coast skyline. The Safari Tents come equipped with cozy bunks, a light, USB charging ports for your gadgets, and a verandah. Some even have their personal fire pit. The amenities are shared with the campgrounds.

Exciting activities for your camping adventure at Binna Burra

Exploration

Camping at Binna Burra involves unwinding at the campground while embarking on brief hikes through ancient Antarctic Beech forests, heathlands, and along exposed cliffs. A glimpse of wildlife is virtually guaranteed. Trails span from the brief 500-meter Rainforest Circuit to the extensive seven-kilometer Caves Track and even a challenging 21.4-kilometer journey between O’Reilly’s and Binna Burra.

Guided night expedition

Don’t overlook the guided Nocturnal Walk, where a Binna Burra guide showcases local marsupials like pademelons, gliders, and possums, alongside owls and spiders. This outing is perfect for the entire family.

Skip the kitchen duties

Forget about cooking and cleaning up, opt for a lavish two or three-course meal at the Tea House Restaurant, conveniently located a short walk from the Binna Burra camping grounds. The restaurant operates from breakfast to dinner every day of the week. Reservations are highly recommended to avoid missing out.

A more informal choice is the Grooms Cottage Bushwalker’s Bar, offering appetizers, light meals, regional wines, and draft beer.
