California leads the US in non-polluting vehicles and the sales for this type of vehicle are still robust. In the initial quarter of 2024, Californians bought slightly above 102,000 zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). Furthermore, California is en route to hit a milestone of two million ZEVs shortly.

Predictably, California also boasts the largest count of public EV charging points, with more planned.

Within the American mainstream and social media landscapes, there is a substantial amount of information, including misleading details, trying to assert that EVs are in a state of “decline” due to certain “issues” that may not actually exist. The continued strong sales of EVs in the state where they are most prevalent debunk such misinformation.

It is insignificant if the sales of particular EV models are not thriving. If their sales are lackluster in regions like Alabama, Kentucky, Wyoming, or the Dakotas, it holds minimal relevance. What really matters are the sales in the high-density areas as they indicate the primary trend.

The California Energy Commission shed light on California’s ZEV sales for CleanTechnica.

California has surpassed its goals for zero-emission vehicles and trucks two years earlier than scheduled. It also achieved the milestone of 10,000 fast EV chargers ahead of schedule. What contributed to this early success in meeting these goals?

Investments through the CEC’s Clean Transportation Program (CTP) and various other state-funded initiatives at the California Air Resources Board aided in the accelerated achievement of these goals. Established in 2007, the CTP was one of the first programs focused on transportation funding to facilitate the advancement of the state’s climate policies. So far, $1.8 billion has been invested in projects supporting ZEV infrastructure, alternative fuels, and advanced vehicle technologies. An additional $1.9 billion was allocated earlier this year.

The state is closing in on the 2 million zero-emission vehicle mark — is there a projected timeline for reaching this total?

The state aims to hit the 2 million ZEV vehicle milestone by year-end or early next year.

Details regarding grants and rebates accessible to low-income Californians can be found at ClimateAction.ca.gov or ElectricForAll.org. Can you provide an overview of these incentives and rebates?

For information on ZEV vehicle incentives and grants, we recommend reaching out to the California Air Resources Board. Their media office can be contacted at comms@arb.ca.gov.

California has seen the installation of 105,000 public or shared private electric vehicle chargers, in addition to over 500,000 at-home chargers. Can you estimate the number of new public EV chargers that will be set up in California over the next 5 years? 10 thousand?

Refer to the latest AB 2127 assessment for more details. Note that the report predicts the need, not the actual deployment. The funding approved in the latest CTP Investment Plan Update will facilitate the addition of 40,000 new chargers statewide.

Is the executive order issued by the Governor in 2020 mandating all new car sales to be emissions-free by 2035 still effective?

Affirmative.
