VW’s ID Buzz: A Camper Conversion for the US That We Wish They Would Sell Us

When the Volkswagen ID Buzz becomes available at your local dealership, a camper van conversion will be ready for it—actually, at least three different versions!

While Volkswagen hasn’t specified when the ID Buzz will be available or its price in the U.S. market, a dedicated automotive workshop has already created camping options and a complete conversion kit for the van. All that’s left is for the nostalgic retro vehicle to arrive.

The Autopian reports that Seattle’s Peace Vans gained access to pre-production models of the ID Buzz and quickly began designing various camping options for it. This passionate, albeit small, VW shop has developed two modular units along with a comprehensive camper conversion kit.

The Buzz.Box serves as an all-inclusive camping system featuring a compact kitchen with ample storage compartments for everything from cooking supplies to an EV charging cable. It is equipped with built-in charging that uses the ID Buzz’s 12V system, which facilitates powering a fridge, lights, speakers, and an overhead wireless charging pad.

Building on the Buzz.Box concept, the Buzz.Box.Sleeper adds a queen-sized sleeping platform. Both Buzz.Box versions necessitate the removal of the third-row seats. Although they are relatively heavy, especially the sleeper option, they were designed for straightforward installation and removal by two people.

If you are curious about the ID Buzz California from the factory, you may be wondering how long you’ll have to wait. The complete camper conversion from Peace Vans is expected to launch by the end of the year. The Buzz.Camper will also require the second and third-row seats to be removed, but in their place, there will be an interior that can transform to suit four different activities: eating, sleeping, working, and relaxing. Installation will take place on-site at Peace Vans, which also allows for customization of finishes and overall configuration.

For those interested in purchasing a single vehicle that includes a kit, the Buzz.Plus package will consist of the ID Buzz along with the option of a conversion kit for either the box, the sleeper, or the camper.

However, there is still one aspect missing: the pop-top! Peace Vans assures customers that they are developing a compliant product that aligns with the US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), with an anticipated release timeframe of late 2025. Anyone who orders an ID Buzz conversion kit will automatically be placed on the priority waiting list.

Pricing begins at $7,995 for the Buzz.Box, while the Buzz.Box.Sleeper is priced at $10,995. Additional costs for shipping, taxes, and installation apply. The price for the Buzz.Camper will be confirmed as the release date approaches, expected in the third quarter of this year. Hopefully, Volkswagen will expedite its adventure van offerings by that time.
