Volkswagen is confident that the upcoming electric version of the GTI will deliver a more enjoyable driving experience than any internal combustion engine (ICE) version that came before it. In an interview with Motor1, CEO Thomas Schäfer asserted that the GTI EV, which is expected to have features similar to the ID. GTI Concept, will possess a superior chassis and suspension, making for an “even more exciting” driving experience. The question remains: do you believe a GTI EV can actually surpass the thrill provided by its petrol-powered predecessors?

A healthy dose of skepticism is advisable regarding automakers’ assertions; however, electric vehicles (EVs) are still in the early stages of their development, particularly performance-oriented models like the anticipated all-electric GTI. Historically, people have been quick to reject new approaches that deviate from the norm, whether it’s the debate over front-wheel vs. rear-wheel drive or manual vs. dual-clutch transmissions. Nevertheless, innovation does not have to equate to dullness, and VW is optimistic that its inaugural electric hot hatch will prove otherwise.

The GTI has traditionally focused less on sheer power, instead prioritizing nimbleness and responsive handling, as seen in models like the Mk7 GTI. As noted by my colleague Nico, the hallmark engine of the GTI lineage is arguably the VR6, and the absence of this engine in several generations did not diminish the reputation of their performance.

Volkswagen aims to create an EV that excels in feel and handling, drawing inspiration from classic models like the Mk1 and Mk5 GTIs, according to Autocar. VW’s R&D Chief, Kai Grünitz, emphasizes the intention to achieve “an agile steering feel and a very smooth driving experience through [the] curves.” He added, “We want to make it agile, really direct, so you can feel the road through the damper settings. It’ll be fast but smooth…”

VW may be on the right track, having designed the ID. GTI to be more compact than previous GTI models and paying careful attention to the vehicle’s weight to optimize for its electric powertrain. Do you believe that an EV GTI could indeed provide a more thrilling driving experience?
