An announcement has been made by Volvo Trucks North America regarding the availability of an engine that complies with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2024 Omnibus regulations pertaining to reduced nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emission standards. The CARB Omnibus guidelines necessitate a 75% decrease in NOx emissions and a 50% reduction in PM emissions from heavy-duty on-road engines for model years 2024 through 2026, compared to existing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines.

To aid customers in navigating the evolving regulatory landscape, Volvo has engineered an engine that meets CARB’s new specifications. Information sessions are also provided by Volvo to keep customers informed and help them make well-informed decisions for their businesses,” mentioned Johan Agebrand, product marketing director at Volvo Trucks North America. The company continues its investments in new powertrain and vehicle technologies to align with their sustainability objectives and their dedication to environmental responsibility. Volvo Trucks also maintains its position in the market with the Class 8 Volvo VNR Electric truck and substantial investments in developing other technologies with zero to near-zero tailpipe emissions.

The CARB 24-compliant engine by Volvo Trucks incorporates an advanced emission control system integrated with a fully serviceable linear exhaust aftertreatment system (EATS). Each element, such as the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), Aftertreatment Heater, and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), is built for separate servicing or replacement, minimizing waste and extending operational lifespan. Additionally, a 48-volt alternator has been integrated into the engine to power a 48-volt battery that operates the heater during startup and low-load scenarios.

The CARB 24-compliant engine can now be ordered in the VNR and current VNL models with a power output of 455 HP and 1650 lb.ft. of torque. Fleet operators interested in learning more about the new engine or placing an order can visit their nearest Volvo Trucks dealership, where the staff are well-versed in the performance and capabilities of the engine. Customers in California or primarily operating in the state are required to submit a completed CARB Certification Form before placing a vehicle order.

As a result of the Clean Truck Partnership agreement reached last year between CARB and truck manufacturers, starting in 2027, federal NOx emissions standards will be harmonized across all 50 states. Volvo Trucks North America stays true to their commitment of delivering innovative transportation solutions that not only meet industry standards but surpass them, equipping customers with the best tools to thrive in a changing market.
