Electric vehicles have become increasingly popular in the past decade, with technology gradually making its way from high-end luxury cars to more affordable models. The next frontier is truly budget-friendly EVs, and Volkswagen’s ID. 2all Concept offers a glimpse into this upcoming era.
VW succinctly describes it as “as roomy as a Golf, as economical as a Polo.” This compact hatchback aims to hit the market at an attractive price point of just €25,000, which translates to around $26,500 USD. Equipped with a 223-horsepower electric motor powering the front wheels, the concept is estimated to have a range of approximately 280 miles on the generous WLTP cycle. While this is ample for a small hatch, lower figures may be expected for base models at the €25,000 price mark.
Although the ID. 2all is currently a concept and not available for purchase, Volkswagen plans to have a production version ready for sale in Europe by 2025. While there is no confirmation about its availability in the US, considering VW’s shift towards similar ICE models like the Golf, it seems less probable.
The production model of the ID. 2all will utilize the new MEB Entry platform, which represents the latest iteration of VW’s MEB platform found in vehicles like the ID.3 and ID.4. Notably, the ID. 2all will be VW’s first front-wheel-drive vehicle based on MEB technology.
The hatchback capitalizes on the advantages of a compact electric powertrain, offering ample interior space within a smaller framework compared to traditional ICE cars. Despite being approximately ten inches shorter than the current Golf, the ID. 2all boasts a similar level of interior space for both passengers and storage. The rear storage capacity ranges from 17.3 to 50 cubic feet, depending on the seating configuration.
The exterior design of the ID. 2all is sleek and refined, evolving from the aesthetics of the Mk 8 Golf. Despite its shorter length, the ID. 2all maintains a wheelbase only an inch smaller than the current Golf, resulting in minimal front and rear overhangs and a modern, purposeful stance. The proportions bear resemblance to the Mk 1 Golf, drawing inspiration from its iconic C pillar. The wraparound lighting design and streamlined front grille emphasize the futuristic nature of this electric vehicle.
The interior follows contemporary design trends with a digital gauge cluster and prominent infotainment screen. Noteworthy features include a physical volume knob for audio control and a dedicated set of buttons for climate adjustments. Adding a charming touch, the accelerator pedal displays a play symbol, while the brake pedal shows a pause icon.
The ID. 2all concept confirms VW’s dedication to electrification. The company has ambitious strategies in this domain, with ten upcoming electric vehicle models scheduled to launch by 2026. Ideally, the final version of the ID. 2all will maintain this exceptional design and will be released at a competitively low price. If accomplished, it might signify the forefront of VW’s forthcoming “electric initiative.”
