Upcoming BMW M340i May Feature a Carbon Fiber Roof Option

After it was announced that BMW will be switching from carbon fiber to steel driveshafts for the M3 and M4 due to new emissions regulations, hints have emerged about the potential use of that surplus carbon.

Recent spy shots obtained by BMW Blog showcase a sportier version of the upcoming next-generation G20 3 Series. Notably, this prototype features its roof panel covered in black tape, which has raised eyebrows, as this is the first time such a modification has been observed. The publication speculates that a carbon-roofed M-Sport 3 Series may be in development, suggesting that this distinctive feature, previously exclusive to M models, might soon be accessible in other variants.

The incorporation of woven roofs in BMW’s M cars first appeared on the E46 M3 CSL. This design approach helps reduce overall weight and lower the center of gravity while further enhancing the visual distinction from standard non-M models.

The next generation of the 3 Series is anticipated to debut in late 2018. According to BMW Blog, the forthcoming M340i could deliver between 380 to 400 horsepower, bringing it close to the 414-hp output of the E92 M3, which was equipped with a carbon fiber roof as standard..
