Mercedes is elevating its SL model to a new realm of opulence. For those who feel that the existing luxury roadster does not offer enough extravagance, the new Maybach SL is bound to impress, complete with a grand presentation.

The latest iteration of the Mercedes SL was crafted by AMG, the performance arm of Mercedes. Wealthy clients can appreciate this not only in the roadster’s agile, curve-embracing handling but also in its athletic design. Following the discontinuation of the opulent S-Class Coupe from the C217 series – which was also offered as a Maybach 650 version – Mercedes is making a return to the luxury market with an open-top model. What better venue for the Maybach SL 680 from the prestigious Monogram Series to make its debut than the luxurious Monterey Car Week at Pebble Beach?

No other Maybach has embodied sportiness quite like the new SL 680, yet potential buyers might be surprised to learn that this exclusive model is not equipped with a renowned V12 engine or the most robust plug-in hybrid from the SL lineup. Instead, it boasts a distinctive two-tone paint finish, exclusive Maybach details, and MM logos throughout, while being powered by the standard 4.0-litre V8 engine from the SL 63, which delivers 430 kW / 585 PS / 800 Nm alongside features like all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering. Notably, its top speed is 260 km/h, which is slower than the AMG versions that can reach up to 315 km/h. Upon its market launch next spring, the Maybach SL will debut in two carefully curated versions called Red and White Ambience, each featuring matching interior and exterior color themes. The interior is enhanced with additional Maybach details, plush Nappa leather, silver chrome accents, and thoughtfully omits the impractical rear seats found in the standard SL.

The front design is striking, featuring a revised grille, an illuminated Maybach emblem, and a distinctive hood. The dark matte hood, adorned with Maybach logos in graphite grey, is an optional feature and showcases meticulous handcrafting. Upon closer inspection, one can discover subtle Maybach touches in the LED headlights, chrome elements, and exclusive bumpers. The dark fabric roof is also embellished with the double Maybach M logo. For those seeking even more luxury, the new Maybach collection includes matching apparel and accessories, such as a leather jacket, sneakers, a scarf, and a dog carrier designed to complement the lavish roadster.
