The VW Passat is renowned for its dependability. Though in the realm of customizing culture, the model is frequently outshined by its more athletic counterparts. However, the Passat B1, especially in its estate form, is cherished among those who admire the allure of vintage German craftsmanship.
Here unfolds the tale of a particular vehicle, a 1979 Passat B1 Variant LS (Type 33), that has undergone an extraordinary metamorphosis in the hands of two enthusiastic proprietors.
The journey of this Passat commenced with Przemek Stojek, a prominent figure in the Polish custom car sector.
Przemek’s fondness for unique and vintage vehicles led him to this uncommon discovery in Szczecin, Poland. Despite its scarcity and the typically high costs associated with aged Passat Variants, Przemek successfully acquired the B1 and promptly began working on it. His vision was crystal clear: a low-profile, sizable-wheeled, attention-grabbing vehicle crafted with a focus on stance aesthetics.
During Przemek’s possession, the Passat was equipped with a customized air ride suspension system by Air-Riders in Gliwice, featuring two Viair 480C compressors, Metal Work valves, and Rubena 130 airbags. This arrangement enabled the car to attain an exceptionally low stance.
The Passat cruised on distinct 17-inch wheels fashioned from 14-inch Mercedes-Benz W201 centers with RH ZW1 components. A Kamei front bumper lip added a hint of fierceness to the vehicle’s front fascia.
The interior remained unaltered except for a Nardi wood-rimmed steering wheel, Momo gearknob, and a custom trunk layout showcasing a vintage manometer.
Przemek’s endeavors did not go unnoticed. The car made its debut at Ultrace 2018 (formerly Raceism) in Wrocław, securing the second position in the Classic Era division at the Tuning Kingz Fabryka gathering that same year.
Despite this initial triumph, Przemek realized there was further potential to be tapped into, but destiny had different intentions. In 2020, the vehicle found a new residence with Arek.
Arkadiusz Niwiński has taken Przemek’s base and upgraded the vehicle significantly. From the moment the B1 was acquired, it underwent a full renovation to enhance nearly every aspect of the automobile.
One remarkable aspect overseen by Arek is the unique 17-inch custom wheels with central locking. Together with these rims, the air suspension system received a thorough overhaul to ensure that the Passat now drives and performs better than ever before. A new coat of paint was also applied.
Beneath the engine bay, various parts were eliminated to achieve a cleaner look. Among the additions are dual Weber carburetors, an adjusted camshaft, and a bespoke exhaust system. Additionally, a Kamei air intake scoop was installed, complemented by a distinctive engine cover that never fails to attract attention.

The exterior enhancements persist with the inclusion of a vintage rooftop cargo carrier, aftermarket mirrors, and louvers on the back window. The consistent Kamei theme witnessed in the project acts as a tribute to Przemek’s initial concept, seamlessly merging with the latest adjustments.
Arek’s dedication to the Passat remains unwavering, despite owning multiple classic VAG vehicles in his collection demanding attention. He envisions an air-ride-equipped trailer to complement the estate, a venture that assures the enhancement of this already distinctive Volkswagen. Despite receiving diverse offers for the Passat, Arek is resolute in preserving it for the years to come, upholding its elegant heritage.
In an automotive exhibition realm where attention often gravitates towards the more predictable picks, this Passat B1 Variant stands out. It represents a fusion of history and European-style adjustments on wheels. As its evolution persists, it’s evident that the journey of this estate is nowhere near its conclusion.
