When planning to spend days or weeks in your vehicle, it’s perfectly reasonable to customize it accordingly. An essential addition would be a rooftop tent to avoid sleeping in your seats and, why not, a coffee press for that morning caffeine boost. However, splurging $124,000 on an extension that transforms your Land Rover Defender or, dare we say, the new Ford Bronco into a bulky quasi-RV may not be necessary.
Nevertheless, that’s exactly what GehoCab specializes in, and this German company has successfully converted Jeep Wranglers and Volkswagen Amaroks into ultra-luxurious car camps. It has now set its sights on the Defender and Bronco, two highly anticipated off-road vehicles. While these models are adored by many for their off-road prowess, seeing them adorned with a small house tacked onto the rear may alter your perception of their aesthetics.
On a more objective note, GehoCab’s previous projects have been impressively executed, seamlessly bringing the comfort of home along on your travels. The structure itself, crafted from carbon fiber, securely attaches to the chassis, forming a sturdy unit that replaces the entire rear section of your vehicle from the rear doors backwards. Inside, you’ll find a range of amenities to make extended journeys tolerable no matter where your destination lies.
In exchange for the rear seats, you gain a passageway (nice) to the living zone which, in premium models, boasts a genuine kitchen and dining space. Double bunk beds are positioned directly above the front seats, and there’s even a toilet and shower available. Solar panels ensure you have sufficient power, and there’s ample water storage. This concept is akin to EarthRoamers and similar setups, except here the SUV’s bodywork is reconfigured instead of decking out a pickup truck with a full bed for a camper attachment.
The additional weight is reportedly around 1,000 pounds, which, considering the purpose, is relatively light, but still a significant addition atop your 4×4. The charm of these comparably compact trucks, in my opinion, lies in their ability to maneuver through tight spaces and extricate themselves from challenging situations. When you possess the same ground clearance as a mid-duty workhorse, navigating technical trails becomes less straightforward. Let’s not overlook the potential for tipping over.
The price mentioned does not cover the vehicle’s base cost, indicating that the total outlay will likely exceed $175,000.
