According to a press release from Toyota, the company’s Research Institute will unveil a new semi-autonomous P4 prototype, which is based on the current Lexus LS500h sedan, at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

This version of the LS includes two semi-autonomous technologies in development at Toyota, named Guardian and Chauffeur. Guardian is designed to extend the capabilities of existing driver assistance features found in current vehicles, such as emergency braking, radar cruise control, and lane-keeping systems. In contrast, Chauffeur aims to evolve into a fully autonomous system that operates without any driver involvement.

“Our focus with Chauffeur development is to achieve full autonomy, where the human element is entirely eliminated from the driving process, whether that means functioning in all situations or within specific driving areas,” explained Ryan Eustice, Vice President of Automated Driving at TRI. “On the other hand, Guardian aims to enhance human driving performance rather than replace it.”

The P4 prototype features significant hardware enhancements compared to the original vehicle. It includes four cameras positioned at each corner of the car to monitor the surroundings. The factory-installed radar system at the front of the LS500 has been upgraded to provide a much wider field of view and can identify objects both near and far. Additionally, eight LiDAR scanners have been strategically placed around the vehicle to eliminate blind spots.

Both Guardian and Chauffeur, along with their advanced hardware, are governed by a sophisticated computing system located in the trunk of the Lexus. This rear-mounted processor interprets sensor data and carries out the rapid calculations necessary to respond in real-time. It operates on high-voltage power provided by the hybrid system of the LS, and it also has the capability to draw auxiliary power from the gas engine’s 12-volt battery.

The new development vehicle will be presented during Toyota’s press conference at CES, scheduled for January 7. For those unable to attend the event in Las Vegas, the vehicle will also be available for viewing at the Lexus booth during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit later this month.
