Toyota has announced a recall affecting nearly 228,000 owners of 2016 and 2017 model year Tacoma trucks due to an issue with the rear differential. The problem arises from an oil leak that may prevent the locking rear differential from functioning as intended. A press release detailing the recall was issued today.
The oil leak poses a risk of damaging the differential, leading to what Toyota describes as “reduced propulsion.” In severe cases, the rear differential could completely fail, resulting in a total loss of propulsion. This situation is clearly dangerous, as it can cause the rear wheels to lock up while driving. Owners whose vehicles fall under this recall are urged to seek inspection.
Toyota will begin sending out recall notices to affected owners starting in mid-June. As with all recalls, there will be no charge for inspections or repairs. Technicians will examine the rear differential for oil leaks. If none are detected, the team will simply tighten components and the vehicle can return to normal use. However, if a leak is found, Toyota will undertake necessary repairs, which may include replacing a gasket or installing a new rear differential carrier assembly, depending on the severity of the issue.
