The company has steadily added a strong range of sports cars to its lineup and significantly expanded its TRD off-road division, creating one of the most dynamic collections of enthusiast vehicles available today. However, numerous models within Toyota’s portfolio still lack performance variants, and we believe that it is the perfect moment for Gazoo Racing (GR) to extend its expertise to these vehicles.

Below are seven Toyota models that we believe warrant the full GR enhancement, each with the potential to emerge as a standout in its category. We are referring to more than just mild performance trims aimed at maximizing consumer spending; we’re seeking models that would feature significant powertrain and chassis improvements, transforming them into true enthusiast vehicles. While it may be ambitious to expect upgrades for all seven models, a couple of enhancements would certainly excite us.

As one of the best-selling vehicles worldwide, the Toyota Camry symbolizes reliability and fuel efficiency for many customers. However, beyond its established reputation lies the capacity for thrilling performance, as evidenced by the previous generation TRD Camry that featured an eye-catching design complete with a substantial rear wing and numerous performance enhancements. This earlier model incorporated a powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 301 horsepower—a solid performance figure, yet we believe there’s room for improvement.

Implementing the Hybrid Max powertrain currently found in models like the Tacoma and Crown would provide a noteworthy boost in performance, increasing output to 340 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque via a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine combined with two electric motors. Given the Camry is already designed to accommodate a hybrid powertrain, this addition seems feasible. Paired with an all-wheel-drive system, assertive styling enhancements, and sport-tuned suspension, this model could emerge as a rare gem in the market.

6 Toyota Crown Signia

The newly launched Toyota Crown Signia brings an impressive blend of style and luxury to the Toyota lineup. While the sedan version of the Crown has struggled to find its footing, we believe the Signia’s more traditional design will resonate better with consumers. This model effectively blurs the lines between Toyota and Lexus and could be even more appealing if GR were involved in its development.

The Crown Signia platform is another prime candidate for the Hybrid Max engine, potentially increasing horsepower by as much as 100 and torque by over 200 lb-ft. This sort of performance would not only make it stand out but allow it to compete head-to-head with rivals like the X3 M50 and AMG GLC 43, ideally at a more competitive price point.

5 Toyota Land Cruiser

The Toyota Land Cruiser has a legendary reputation in the off-road community, but envisioning a GR variant could elevate it further, creating an SUV tuned for road performance that rivals renowned models like the Mercedes G-Class and Ford Bronco Raptor. While the G-Class is a formidable off-roader that excels as a luxurious street vehicle, with a powerful V8 engine, a Land Cruiser GR could combine significant off-road capabilities with impressive on-road presence.

Picture a Land Cruiser that retains its exceptional off-road features but enhances on-road appeal with stylish larger wheels, road-friendly tires, and the twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6 engine from the Tundra, generating 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. A GR version of the Land Cruiser could become an aspirational model unlike any other, generating significant profit margins for the company.

4 Toyota Century GRMN

The Toyota Century GRMN could represent a significant leap in the luxury SUV market, combining high-end amenities with powerful performance. A sophisticated tri-motor hybrid system could be integrated to deliver an impressive 600 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque, ensuring that this vehicle stands out in a competitive segment tailored for the elite. With its opulent features and potential speed capabilities, the Century GRMN could challenge some of the most luxurious vehicles available today, offering a compelling alternative for discerning buyers.

3 Toyota Prius Prime

The Prius Prime has paved the way in hybrid technology, historically focusing on efficiency over excitement. However, the latest incarnation has shown a commendable boost in performance. Upon testing, we found that while the model exhibited improved characteristics, it still fell short of sporty aspirations. If the GR team were to take on the Prius Prime platform, it could lead to remarkable changes.

By adopting the turbocharged three-cylinder engine from the GR Corolla, combined with hybrid technology, the Prius Prime GR could emerge as a performance-oriented hybrid—maintaining eco-friendliness while delivering engaging performance. Considering Toyota’s enthusiasm about the platform’s potential, we believe this may be the most feasible upgrade on our list.

2 Toyota Tacoma GR

The Toyota Tacoma remains a favorite among both everyday truck buyers and off-road enthusiasts, a trend that seems set to continue with the new generation. Although the existing TRD Pro variant has been popular for its off-road capabilities, there is a growing desire for a more street-focused version, especially following the unveiling of the X-Runner concept at SEMA 2023.

This concept stood out with its dramatic modifications, including a lowered stance, an aggressive body kit, and a side-exiting exhaust. Furthermore, the twin-turbo hybrid V6 engine from the Tundra made an appearance, providing an incredible 421 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, all powered to the rear. The company is reportedly considering putting this striking concept into production if there is sufficient interest.

1 Toyota bZ4X

The bZ4X marks Toyota’s foray into the electric vehicle market. While it serves its purpose well, it may not fully meet the performance expectations of buyers. The vehicle is not slow or poor, but a tri-motor variant could significantly enhance its capabilities. Toyota currently lacks any models with such a powertrain planned, but aiming for at least 500 horsepower and close to 300 miles of range, along with expected chassis upgrades, could greatly enhance the model’s reputation and bolster Toyota’s position in the EV sector.

1 Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia is a spacious full-size SUV that balances comfort with off-road capability. However, the option of a dedicated performance model akin to the Cadillac Escalade V might attract a wider audience. While the 2025 model has undergone significant updates, including the introduction of a 1794 edition there may be opportunity for a GR variant in 2026.

To elevate the Sequoia further, Toyota could enhance the existing hybrid powertrain instead of opting for a larger engine. Adding one or two motors could potentially boost output to the 600-horsepower mark, which would make headlines, and aesthetic updates could grant the vehicle the aggressive look associated with a family SUV comfortable enough for high-speed cruising at 150 mph.
