In the 1990s, many iconic race cars were transformed for everyday use. The Porsche 962CR Schuppan serves as a prime illustration of this phenomenon, and now, one of these uncommon marvels can be yours. Provided you have the necessary funds.
The Porsche 956 and 962 are acknowledged as one of the most accomplished lineages of racing vehicles in history. They secured a combined total of 17 triumphs across various challenging races. The 962, in particular, clinched victory at Le Mans in the years 1986 and 1987, marking a significant chapter in its illustrious trajectory. Renowned Porsche driver Vern Schuppan utilized his 962s in the latter part of the 1980s before electing to reconfigure them for on-road functionality post their track exploits. A sum of six cars were meticulously crafted, backed by an investment consortium from Japan. Presently, one of these extraordinary machines is available for purchase at Bingo Sports.
Referred to as the 962CR Schuppan, this road-ready variant features a twin-turbo, 3.3-liter horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine at the rear. Producing an impressive output of 600 horsepower sent to the rear wheels through a traditional five-speed manual transmission. Encased within a racing monocoque structure with a carbon fiber body.
The very design of the vehicle clearly demonstrates it was not designed for regular civilian usage. Gaining access to the interior necessitates maneuvering under the vertically lifting door and over the broad and deep sill. Nevertheless, the cabin has room for two occupants—just about. It is likely that the absence of extensive interior images may be due to the photographer not having the appropriate lens for the confined spaces of the interior.
Nevertheless, the vehicle does make some significant compromises for on-road use. The suspension’s springs and dampers were exchanged for variations better suited to the irregularities of actual streets. The interior was also upgraded with some leather for the convenience of buyers unaccustomed to spartan racing seats. Additionally, there is a basic set of HVAC controls, although the rest of the switchgear remains notably geared towards racing specifications.
It’s safe to say that this isn’t your everyday driver. However, if you desire a vehicle that you can drive to the racetrack and then outperform much of the competition, the 962CR might just be the solution. There’s no price reference available, but considering this is one of only six former race cars from Porsche’s illustrious era—if you have to inquire, you likely can’t afford it.
