A few years ago, the crew at Paco Motorsports, situated in central Kentucky, crafted an NA Mazda MX-5 “Offroadster” that caught the attention of local enthusiasts. This led a patron to approach Paco Motorsports with a request to replicate the concept for an ND MX-5. Although custom builds were not their usual forte, they decided to make an exception given that they already had a 2017 ND Mazda MX-5 RF as a test platform. Consequently, they embarked on creating this off-road MX-5 RF equipped with 30-inch off-road tires.
The primary focus was on the suspension system, which featured modified Koni shock absorbers mated with longer progressive springs to offer 8-9 inches of wheel travel per corner. Additionally, the entire rear suspension configuration was revamped to grant the off-road MX-5 a two-inch longer wheelbase. To accommodate the substantial 30-inch rear tires and 28-inch front tires, both bumpers were replaced with CAD-designed tubular bumper guards. The customer also requested a switch to five-lug wheels, necessitating the replacement of the original four-lug hubs with five-lug counterparts.
The fenders were meticulously cut and outfitted with sturdy steel fender flares, then coated with a protective bed liner material. Finally, the side rocker sliders were carefully crafted using steel tubing and designed using CAD technology.
Front tubular steel bumper now houses Hella spotlights, and plans are in place to incorporate Hella LED headlights, featuring both high and low beams, in the upcoming updates. Additional modifications on the horizon include a trunk rack and a custom wrap, though the vehicle is largely complete. Once it completes its promotional rounds at Barber Motorsports Park and various MX-5 gatherings, the customer will take delivery of their purpose-built off-road MX-5.
The most intriguing aspect of this project is its potential availability to any MX-5 owner interested in a similar setup. Mark Rivera from Paco Motorsports mentioned to The Drive that they are contemplating offering the suspension modifications for MX-5 owners. There is also a possibility of selling the bumpers and rocker sliders, though this is not confirmed. Pricing details for these components are currently unavailable.
Despite no modifications to the engine, it retains Mazda’s naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 155 horsepower. Even with its modest power output, the off-road Mazda MX-5 looks exhilarating, and Paco Motorsports may witness a surge in orders once the public gets a glimpse of it.
