In the automotive world, the saying “if it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing” rings especially true for the wild BMW M3 E46, which has been modified to house an impressive Viper V-10 engine beneath its hood. The term “under” is somewhat misleading, given that a large rectangle has been cut from the hood to accommodate this powerful engine and allow it ample airflow. Interestingly, this is not the first occurrence of an M3 E46 being outfitted with a V-10.

Determined to enhance the original performance of the M3’s standard 3.2-liter S54B32 inline-six engine, which generates 338 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, the Sulava Racing Team based in Georgia (the country, not the U.S. state) opted for a far more potent option.

After consulting with the racing team, it was confirmed that the engine they chose comes from a third-generation Dodge Viper SRT-10 Roadster. This 8.3-liter V-10 engine produces a substantial 510 horsepower and 535 pound-feet of torque. The M3 also features a T-56 six-speed manual transmission sourced from the Viper. Notably, the engine remains unaltered aside from the major modification of swapping it into the M3.

To fit this formidable powertrain, extensive modifications were made to the M3’s body. A section of the hood was removed, and a widebody kit was installed to accommodate larger tires while keeping them within the vehicle’s profile. The car also boasts custom front and rear spoilers, ensuring stability on the road, alongside a distinctive green paint job and exhaust outlets at the rear rather than the sides, as seen on a Viper.

While the added weight at the front and the raw power of the Viper V-10 might lead to arguments that this modification detracts from the M3’s performance, the essence of this project is not about practicality or grooming. It’s about embracing the thrill of doing something extraordinary—just for the sake of having done it..
