Throughout the extensive history of Volkswagen hatchbacks powered by water-cooled engines, the first and second-generation Scirocco models stand out as favorites among VW enthusiasts. These hatchbacks were the sportier versions of the iconic Golf models of their times, offering a touch of sophistication. When equipped with performance-oriented suspension and tires, they exuded a racing aura that captivated many. They even looked astonishing when transformed into competitive race cars.

The reintroduction of the Scirocco name by VW in 2008 was met with excitement worldwide, except in the United States, where enthusiasts were left disappointed as the model wasn’t available for purchase. This absence made spotting a Scirocco on American roads nearly impossible, unless you took significant steps and invested a substantial amount of money, similar to what VW aficionado Alex did with his own vehicle. As reported by The Smoking Tire, admire this unique Scirocco conversion that involves elements from a Mark 5 VW R32.

Alex successfully managed to legalize his Scirocco for American roads and enhanced its performance with premium aftermarket components. Underneath the Scirocco’s sleek body lies significant elements borrowed from the R32 model. Given their shared platform, the integration was seamless, helping Alex bypass potential issues with the US regulatory bodies. In essence, it’s R32 beneath the surface, topped with elements from the Scirocco, including the chassis and interior.

According to Alex, all modifications were expertly executed by HPA Motorsports, a renowned Canadian powerhouse specializing in VW/Audi vehicles known for their meticulous, exceptional builds. The highlight of this transformation is HPA Motorsports’ FT565 Twin Turbo Kit, featuring two GT28RS-based turbochargers, dual air-to-air intercoolers, and water-methanol injection, boosting the 3.2-liter VR6 engine. Tuned by HPA, the car now delivers 565 horsepower to the wheels, a feat that Alex believes can be pushed even further. This impressive performance upgrade is remarkable considering that the stock VW Scirocco was equipped with a 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder engine that produced a maximum of 276 horsepower from the factory.

In the US market, the Mark 5 R32 was available solely with a DSG dual-clutch transmission, a feature retained in Alex’s build. However, HPA enhanced this transmission with an updated clutch pack, optimized tuning, and a competition Haldex controller. Additional upgrades include improved braking systems, a Rieger body kit and exhaust, KW V3 coilovers, and stylish BBS wheels, making this VW Scirocco one of the most impressive custom builds to date. Alex revealed that he invested a considerable sum, amounting to the mid-$100,000s, into transforming his ‘Rocco to reach this high level of performance—an investment that could have easily been directed towards a more exotic and conventionally faster car, like a Lamborghini Murcielago. However, for a VW enthusiast like Alex, this renovation was the perfect choice. Personally, I fully endorse this decision and would likely pursue a similar project if given the opportunity, perhaps opting for a BMW S58-swapped E87 BMW 130i.
