This $325K Ford Mustang GTD Utilizes Zip Ties Similar to Your Vehicle

The Ford Mustang GTD stands out as the pinnacle of track-ready pony cars, engineered with meticulous attention to performance. However, it doesn’t shy away from practical solutions for straightforward issues. This is exemplified by the use of zip ties that assist in securing components of the Mustang GTD’s rear suspension, a detail that Ford doesn’t attempt to conceal.

Recently released images reveal these common tools of DIY mechanics through the polycarbonate suspension display window located at the back of the Mustang GTD’s interior. This 24-by-10-inch panel serves the purpose of showcasing the car’s semi-active rear suspension, which is positioned inboard and activated via pushrods to achieve optimal weight distribution. The system utilizes dual springs and hydraulic elements to modify ride height and stiffness, coupled with Multimatic Adaptive Spool Valve dampers that provide precise control over body movement. These dampers are capable of transitioning from their softest to firmest settings in just 15 milliseconds, making them suitable for a wide range of track conditions.

However, not every element of the GTD’s suspension boasts cutting-edge technology.

Upon closer inspection of the assembly depicted in the image above, it’s clear that a yellow wire is secured to the suspension with three bright orange bands. These are unmistakably zip ties, commonly known as a quick-fix solution favored by some less-than-neat mechanics. However, their presence in a high-end vehicle like the Mustang GTD may be more practical than it appears at first glance.

Zip ties, also referred to as cable ties, are known for their impressive tensile strength, ability to withstand vibrations, and low conductivity, making them suitable as fasteners in a track-ready vehicle. In the Mustang GTD, they appear to be utilized merely for securing wires rather than for any structural support—unlike those infamous instances where a front bumper is attached with zip ties. In fact, I use them to fasten the kill switch in my own race car.

While it may be tempting to poke fun at the most expensive factory Mustang employing such a budget-friendly solution, it’s clear that this approach is practical. It’s worth noting that these images showcase a pre-production model, so Ford may opt to modify the method of securing those wires (though honestly, I see no compelling reason to). Moreover, considering that zip ties are utilized by Formula 1 teams and even on the Mars rover, they are undoubtedly adequate for the Mustang GTD. Here’s to hoping it can conquer the Nürburgring in under seven minutes this summer.
