It has just dawned on me that there are limited options when it comes to electric convertibles. Your selections basically include either an aged Tesla Roadster or a GMC Hummer EV, both of which come with a hefty price tag of over $100,000 and are often hard to come by. On the other hand, the Tesla Model S is quite prevalent these days, and the cost of converting one into a convertible is likely more economical compared to the other choices.

Custom Tesla Model S convertibles are now being offered by Newport Convertible Engineering, a company renowned for its bespoke convertible vehicles and high-performance cars. In the past, it created a convertible version of the Model 3, which didn’t receive much praise in terms of appearance, but at the time, options were limited. Now, they are offering this customization for Tesla’s premium sedan, including the Plaid variant with a staggering 1,000 horsepower, as exemplified by the red vehicle showcased here. (A quick warning—the video is bright and may be harsh on the eyes.)

Newport Convertible Engineering mentioned to The Drive that the alteration includes reinforcements along the rocker panels and interior, and the soft top “is crafted to match the highest speed capabilities of the Tesla.” The conversion also appears to keep the B-pillars and a portion of the roof linking them intact, enhancing safety in case of a rollover. The rear seat seems more challenging to access due to an extension on the C-pillar for supporting the roof frame.

Regarding pricing, NCE states that the conversion costs $50,000 and requires four months for completion. Considering the used market value of the Model S hovers around $40,000, the total sum surpasses $90,000. However, this cost remains significantly lower than what you would pay for any other electric vehicle with a removable top.

Furthermore, if executed on a Plaid model, you’ll be closer to acquiring a new Roadster than Tesla’s potential offering. Not to be taken seriously, but don’t anticipate it to levitate.
