The Genesis brand from Hyundai is causing a splash in the premium automobile sector unlike many other companies in recent decades. With a distinct design philosophy and upcoming electric vehicle technology, the brand is challenging competitors like BMW, Audi, and Mercedes with a clear perspective on the types of vehicles it intends to create and the target audience it aims to serve.
However, the ultimate luxurious vehicle that the manufacturer has yet to produce is a two-door grand tourer similar to the BMW 8 Series or the Mercedes S-Class Coupe. Recently, though, they have started exploring that direction with a breathtaking design study. The magnificent Genesis X Concept showcases the intent of the Korean automaker to make a strong statement; featuring just two doors, a distinctive low-profile design, and one of the most intriguing gear shifters ever seen in a car, this concept is practically demanding to be put into production.
To ensure future readiness, the Genesis X Concept employs electric propulsion. As a concept, detailed specifications regarding its electric powertrain are currently unavailable, but it eschews a traditional internal combustion engine for a more futuristic approach. The Korean automaker describes it as a “high-performance” electric vehicle, suggesting that if it were to enter production, it would likely offer significant horsepower to complement its impressive design.
The Genesis team already possesses a potent electric powertrain that could potentially be utilized in this vehicle. Kia, the Korean automaker’s affiliated brand, recently revealed the EV6 crossover, with its top-tier GT variant boasting 577 horsepower and a range exceeding 300 miles. Around 600 horsepower would likely be more than sufficient for this model, although enhancements in range would be necessary for it to become a truly long-distance touring grand tourer.
However, surpassing the typical luxury grand tourer, Genesis’ parent company Hyundai envisions this vehicle as being sustainable, forward-thinking, and distinguishing itself from its European competitors. During an unveiling event, José Muñoz, the President and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America, stated, “Many luxury brands are nostalgic, focusing on their heritage. We are oriented towards the future. Our focus is on electrification and disruption within the industry.”
