BMW has a challenging history when it comes to translating its concept cars into production models. Iconic designs such as the 328 Hommage, M1 Hommage, and the Nazca C2 have left fans disappointed over the years. Even models like the Z4 Concept Touring Coupe and the Vision M Next, which appeared to have a strong case for production, were ultimately shelved. Therefore, when BMW’s head of design expresses optimism about the newly unveiled Skytop potentially reaching production, it’s hard not to feel skeptical.

The BMW Concept Skytop debuted at the 2024 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este over the weekend, showcasing one of the brand’s most visually appealing modern concepts. The Skytop features a nostalgic design with a targa-top roof and distinctive lines running across the hood and trunk, drawing inspiration from classic models like the BMW 503 and Z8. Remarkably, it appears ready for production, which is intentional.

Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW Group’s head of design, commented to the media at Villa d’Este, “We’re not sure whether we’re going to make it. But we could, because this time we incorporated all the lessons learned into the design phase.” He noted that the Skytop features road-legal headlights and taillights, facilitating a limited production run if there is sufficient consumer interest, which appears to be the case.

Van Hooydonk indicated that there are indeed customers who “definitely want one.” If enough enthusiasts express their interest, there’s a strong argument for BMW to proceed with production. “From a technical standpoint, yes, it’s very feasible,” he added.

The Skytop’s practicality is evident when examining its interior, which closely resembles that of the BMW M8, albeit with upgraded leather. Given that the Skytop utilizes the M8’s engine, it is expected to share the same powertrain. Of all BMW’s modern concepts, this may be the most straightforward to develop and market.

Despite its mixed record, BMW has occasionally succeeded in bringing some of its more exciting concepts to market. The Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept eventually evolved into the BMW i8, and more recently, the low-volume M4-based 3.0 CSL emerged from the 3.0 CSL Hommage. It is hoped that the Skytop will follow in their footsteps, as van Hooydonk acknowledges the necessity for BMW to turn dreams into reality for its customers. “I believe that for our customers, you always need to have things they can dream of, and sometimes you need to fulfill those dreams,” he stated.
