Since its recent debut, the
Kia EV9 has been constantly in focus. Initially showcasing the exterior of the three-row EV, recent updates have shed
light on the powerful mechanics hidden beneath the surface. Not content with just creating
a practical family vehicle, reports indicate that the Korean automaker is also planning to develop a thrilling high-performance model.
The fastest confirmed Kia EV9 model to date is set to feature a 380-hp dual-motor setup, promising a swift 5.3-second acceleration from zero to 60 mph. According to
CarBuzz, there’s buzz about an even more exhilarating variant in the works. Kia’s president and
CEO, Ho Sung Song, shared with the media, “Expanding on the success of the
Kia EV6 GT, we are delighted to unveil our plans for a high-performance version of the EV9.”
The upcoming EV9 GT will elevate the performance of the GT-Line, bringing it to a whole new level. Kia
Song revealed that the GT iteration of the EV9 is targeted for an early 2025 release. Positioned above the already announced GT-Line model, the EV9 GT is expected to offer more power, potentially affecting efficiency. While the base EV9 promises over
300 miles of driving range in its top configuration, the EV9 GT might see a slight decrease in this number.
A compelling comparison can be drawn with the existing EV6 GT, a compact crossover featuring a robust 576 hp dual-motor system capable of hitting 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. Interestingly, it offers two drift modes for electric thrill-seekers. Moreover, rumors suggest that the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N could deliver up to 620 hp. Both these vehicles share the same E-GMP platform as the Kia EV9.
The drivetrains from the Ioniq 5 N or EV6 GT could potentially find their way into the EV9, or Kia might develop an even more potent setup specifically for this unique model. In any case, a power output around 600 hp seems fitting for the EV9 GT, positioning it closer to the entry-level trim of the Tesla Model X, delivering 670 hp and distinguishing it from the dominant Plaid editions. Given various considerations such as weight, the EV9 GT could potentially achieve a sub-4-second sprint to 60 mph with approximately 600 horsepower under the hood.

It’s encouraging to see Kia, along with its parent company Hyundai, fully embracing the realm of electric performance. While skeptics may criticize electric vehicles for lacking spontaneity, this dynamic duo from Korea is unapologetically creating compelling and thrilling EVs. More power will undoubtedly enhance the driving experience of Kia’s stunning electric lineup.
