The Ram 1500 Revolution Electric Pickup Concept Unveils Featuring a Midgate and Third-Row Jump Seats

As this is a concept and not the finalized production model, specific power figures are unavailable. Nevertheless, Ram claims that the Revolution Concept features a pair of electric motors and offers all-wheel-drive capability. This places it more in the realm of the F-150 Lightning and Silverado EV, rather than the tri-motor GMC Hummer EV or quad-motor Rivian. This was widely expected by myself and many others, even if the Ram is notably more extravagant than the Ford, at least based on the specifications we have at this time.

It is unlikely that we will see such a radical-looking electric Ram on the streets, although Stellantis Chief Design Officer Ralph Gilles mentioned that the front fascia closely resembles its final iteration. One detail he emphasized was the low-profile roof, which not only aids aerodynamics but also enhances its visual appeal. Nonetheless, we can anticipate its true production specification soon, as both Gilles and Ram CEO Mike Koval Jr. assured me that it will be unveiled “within the next few months.”

The Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept is constructed on the STLA Frame platform, which integrates a structural battery pack within the conventional body-on-frame truck design. The inclusion of independent rear suspension with air assist is expected to provide a comfortable ride, building upon the coil-spring arrangement that Ram has employed in its half-ton pickups for a considerable period. Consequently, it does not represent a significant departure from the Ram trucks we are already familiar with in these aspects.

However, where it diverges is in the realm of technology. This show model lacks a B-pillar, a standard feature for concepts to enhance visibility of the interior gadgets. Beyond that, a detachable lower display on the dashboard can function as a tablet, a workspace within the truck bed, or even a gaming controller, according to Ram. When combined with the upper unit, this puppy boasts over 28 inches of screen space.

Gaze at the rear of the cabin and you’ll notice the furthest glass panel actually lowers to function as a midgate, a feature also present in the Silverado EV. This is all part of an intricate storage arrangement Ram has devised for the Revolution BEV Concept, which also includes a barn-door bed extender and a pass-thru frunk cubby. Together, this enables you to transport items up to 18 feet long inside the truck without needing a trailer or a bed rack. Quite clever!

Additionally, it features third-row jump seats reminiscent of those found in vintage trucks. Don’t count on those making it to production.

Other impressive yet practical features include four-wheel steering, allowing the rear wheels to pivot up to 15 degrees for enhanced maneuverability. As trucks appear to increase in size each year, new truck buyers will appreciate any improvements in this area, especially in crowded parking lots. There’s also a feature referred to as Shadow Mode by Ram, where the truck uses its array of cameras and sensors to track the owner closely as they exit the vehicle. This could be particularly useful in tight spaces and for slow movement on a work site while carrying materials.

Speculating on how many electric Rams like this one you might encounter on the road is beside the point. The true nature of the truck will be revealed in due time, likely this spring. It is scheduled for production next year in 2024, alongside what Koval Jr. refers to as “a range of electrified offerings.” However, rest assured, the real-world version of the 1500 Revolution will hold significant importance for the brand and everyday consumers alike.
