Dodge is currently riding high on the success of its Charger, Challenger, and Durango models. However, to stay competitive, Dodge must introduce new offerings to its lineup. Rumors suggest that the brand may turn to Italy for inspiration with the potential introduction of a Dodge Hornet crossover, based on the Alfa Romeo Tonale platform.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale, initially showcased as a concept in 2019, is set to be a compact hybrid crossover that will utilize the platform of the Jeep Compass. Production is slated to take place at Alfa’s Pomigliano D’Arco factory near Naples, Italy, where reports indicate that the Tonale and the Dodge Hornet will share a production line. Although no hybrid variant is mentioned for the Hornet, both vehicles are rumored to feature the 2.0-liter turbo engine found in the Wrangler.
If the Hornet makes its way to the American market, it will represent Dodge’s first new model introduction since the 2013 Dart and the first fresh utility vehicle since the 2011 Durango. The nameplate “Hornet” has been actively pursued by Stellantis, with multiple USPTO filings hinting at the brand’s interest in the moniker.
The production timeline for the Tonale and the potential Hornet was reported to have faced a 12-week delay due to demands for improved performance from the PHEV drivetrain by Alfa’s new CEO. Stellantis aims to kick off Tonale production in March 2022 with sales slated to begin on June 4 of the following year, setting a similar arrival timeframe for the rumored Dodge Hornet.
A Reddit user claiming to be involved in the development at Stellantis hinted at the potential Dodge Hornet, confirming that the Hellcat variant is not in the plans but leaving the door open for SRT models. The prospect of an off-road hybrid model like the Jeep Compass 4xe is also on the table, although a fully electric version is not anticipated, as that market is currently occupied by another new Jeep model.
