Finally making its comeback, the rotary engine is back on the scene powering the new Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV as a supplementary generator. While the standard MX-30 operates solely on electric power, the inclusion of the Wankel rotary engine in the R-EV model transforms it into an electric vehicle with extended range capabilities.

Let’s dive into the key specifications. The stand-alone electric range clocks in at just 53 miles on the European WLTP cycle, significantly lower than the often-criticized 100-mile MX-30 EV, due to a smaller 17.8 kWh battery compared to the EV’s 32.0 kWh. To compensate for this, the rotary engine equipped with a 13.2-gallon fuel tank steps in.

Another highlight is the presence of a “1,500-watt power supply feature” that seems ideal for charging laptops via V2L technology. The vehicle offers three driving modes: Normal, for everyday use, EV mode for emission-free driving by deactivating the rotary engine, and Charge mode to engage the rotary engine continuously for battery replenishment.

The Edition R variant of the R-EV model introduces a stylish black-and-red color theme. The specific shade of red, known as Maroon Rouge Metallic, is a modern rendition of the red hue seen on the roof of Mazda’s original passenger car, the R360 Coupe. Paying homage to Mazda’s legacy is the newly designed rotary badge showcased on the floor mats, headrests, and fenders.

The upcoming Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is set to arrive in Europe, with U.S. availability currently uncertain.

For those unfamiliar, the rotary engine features a distinctive design, using a triangular rotor instead of traditional pistons for combustion. Although Mazda didn’t create this technology (credit goes to Felix Wankel), the rotary engine has been iconic in Mazda’s sports car lineup, powering models like the RX-8, various RX7 generations, and the Le Mans-winning 787B.
