A TikTok individual named Tyler Atkin decided to enhance his Miata by integrating a Nintendo Wii steering wheel, resulting in his video garnering millions of views.

The modification process was simple. Atkin removed his Nardi steering wheel from the quick-release mechanism he had previously installed. Subsequently, he installed the small plastic Wii steering wheel, housing the Wiimote controller inside for the complete effect.

Originally intended for playing Mario Kart, the plastic wheel has a diameter of approximately 8 inches. It’s notably small; in comparison, most standard automotive wheels measure well over 13 inches in diameter.

The modification was initially done for display purposes only, with Atkin’s initial video amassing a whopping 3.1 million views on TikTok. Things escalated from there, as Atkin incorporated more Wii peripherals inside the car. The gearstick received a Nunchuk controller, while the e-brake handle was swapped out for a Wii baseball bat. Other additional features included a WiiFit mat in the driver’s footwell and a Wiimote wrist strap on Atkin’s keychain. The original stereo system was replaced with a Wii console and screen, enabling Atkin to literally play Mario Kart while driving.

Atkin eventually succumbed to the pressure to drive the car with the Wii wheel attached. He described it as “completely dreadful,” which is unsurprising given that it’s not aligned properly. There’s limited leverage to manoeuver the wheel, and the plastic material is pliable. Although Atkin’s Miata has power steering, which helps to some extent, it remains exceptionally challenging to steer, especially at low speeds.

Based on appearances, it seems that the plastic wheel is secured by just two screws. If the wheel were to detach while driving, the repercussions would be catastrophic.

The Miata has always been a platform for enjoyment, with owners more inclined than others to experiment and deviate from conventional norms. We’ve witnessed stock Miatas conquering rugged off-road trails or receiving whimsical art-deco makeovers, transforming into vintage Grand Prix racers. Moreover, the internet consistently showcases a few Miata variants modified with LS engines, boasting an impressive 1 kilohorsepower at the wheels.

The Wii-inspired design offers a fresh perspective for the Miata, a vehicle that has undergone numerous other alterations. Now, we just have to anticipate the potential arrival of Xbox and PlayStation themed Miatas, unless a Sega-themed version takes the lead first…
