This week, there has been a lot of talk about the 2025 Ram 1500 Rev, particularly due to its ambitious goal of a 500-mile maximum range. This is a milestone not often achieved by electric sedans, let alone robust pickup trucks that weigh nearly as much as a city bus. Let’s also not overlook its essential truck duties, such as towing up to an impressive 14,000 pounds.

This figure is quite significant, especially for a sub-HD pickup. The 2023 Ford F-150 tops out at 14,000 pounds, but it relies on a gasoline engine, a traditional solid rear axle, and leaf springs for this feat. Additionally, Ford achieves this capacity with a lighter single-cab, two-wheel-drive model. In contrast, the Ram faces additional challenges—a large battery pack, four-wheel drive, four full doors, and independent rear suspension. While the latter may not be a disadvantage, it is an unconventional setup for hard-working trucks, which is worth noting.

Considering these factors, the claim of a 14,000-pound towing capacity for the Ram 1500 Rev seems quite daring. Its GVWR may classify it as a Class 3 vehicle like the Ford F-350, but a significant portion of its rating is likely utilized for carrying the heavy battery pack. To put it in perspective, the GMC Hummer EV, with a weight exceeding 9,000 pounds, is partly due to its 200-kilowatt-hour battery; the long-range Ram features a 229-kWh unit. Achieving the targeted maximum capacity may require significant weight reduction, possibly with a basic Tradesman model, but it is not an impossible task.

Currently, the Rivian R1T holds the title for the most capable electric truck in terms of towing, with a maximum capacity of 11,000 pounds. It is closely followed by the Ford F-150 Lightning, which can tow 10,000 pounds when properly equipped. These trucks share similarities with the Ram, such as IRS, four-wheel drive, and four full doors, but their battery capacities peak at 135-kWh and 131-kWh, respectively.

Ram

The presence of eight-lug hubs on the Ram 1500 Rev, typically seen on trucks with Cummins diesel engines, is undoubtedly beneficial. They signify a robust foundation, coupled with the truck’s STLA Frame construction, which is likely body-on-frame.

Further details about the electric truck’s architecture will remain unknown until Ram unveils it, or we have the opportunity to closely examine a production model. Considering the 1500 Rev’s planned late 2024 release, it may take some time before we can delve deeper into its specifications.
