Fast forward to last year when Maserati introduced the Grecale. This SUV is the second addition to Maserati’s lineup and is envisioned as “The Everyday Exceptional.” Interestingly, the Levante could also fit this description quite aptly. The size of the Grecale is comparable, albeit slightly shorter in length while maintaining similar width and height dimensions. The design of the Grecale, although distinct from the Levante, exudes a fresh, open, and inviting aura. Additionally, an all-electric variant of the Grecale is expected soon, marking a significant advancement for this newer model.
The Grecale is currently available in three trim levels: GT, Modena, and the highly sought-after Trofeo. Following Maserati’s disclosure that the Ferrari-sourced twin-turbo V8 engine would no longer be offered in future Trofeo iterations, uncertainties arose regarding the future of this trim level. Nevertheless, hopes were high that Maserati would maintain the Trofeo lineup with a version of its impressive new Nettuno turbo V6 engine as a replacement for the Ferrari powerplant. And indeed, Maserati delivered on this expectation. While the GT and Modena models are propelled by a potent hybrid turbo-four engine, the Grecale Trofeo is equipped with a 525 horsepower variant of the turbocharged V6 engine, delivering an exhilarating driving experience.
Maserati graciously provided us with a stunning blue Grecale Trofeo for a few days, and we eagerly embraced the opportunity to test it out.
The exterior, as previously mentioned, exudes a more contemporary vibe compared to the Levante. Some angles even hint at a subtle resemblance to the Porsche Macan, which is certainly not a negative association. The overall look is more refined, sleeker, and athletically designed, making the Grecale one of the most visually striking SUVs on the market currently.
The interior of the Grecale also showcases a modern and alluring demeanor, distinct from the more conservative interior of the Levante. The layout is more ergonomic, with a large, curved infotainment screen that centralizes various controls into a single, intuitive interface. The premium leather upholstery, flawless stitching on the seats and dash, and extensively adjustable front seats ensure a comfortable and luxurious experience. The backseats, while slightly lacking in legroom, offer adequate comfort and are equipped with heating for passenger convenience. Additionally, the ample cargo space behind the rear seats can be expanded by folding them flat.
The Trofeo’s engine is a marvel in itself. Initially featured in the high-performance MC20, the Nettuno engine won our hearts with its smooth acceleration, potent power delivery, and melodious exhaust note. Although slightly detuned for the Grecale application, the engine still delivers robust performance and a compelling sound signature that epitomizes Italian craftsmanship. Acceleration is immediate and vigorous, providing ample passing power, making overtaking maneuvers a breeze. Furthermore, the engine boasts a cylinder deactivation system that enhances fuel efficiency and reduces carbon emissions, a commendable feature.
The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with exquisitely responsive paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel, allowing seamless gear changes for an engaging driving experience.
The braking system features substantial Brembo calipers that deliver the stopping power one would anticipate from such reputable components. Offering precise feedback and linear response, the brakes enhance control and inspire confidence in all driving scenarios.
These components are complemented by 21-inch Maserati Pegaso wheels wrapped in high-performance tires, working harmoniously with Maserati’s all-wheel-drive system to provide a composed and secure ride quality.
The Grecale is equipped with an air-adjustable suspension system that offers remarkable versatility. By simply turning a dial on the steering wheel, the ride comfort can be tailored from “Comfort” to the track-worthy “Corsa” mode. Notably, selecting Corsa mode causes the Grecale to lower its ride height by about 2 inches for improved handling and stability. Moreover, by switching to “Off-Road” mode, the Grecale raises its ride height by 2 inches for enhanced ground clearance, showcasing its impressive adaptability.
Our impressions of the Grecale Trofeo were overwhelmingly positive. I would argue that it offers 90% of the Levante’s appeal at only 60% of the price. The tested Grecale Trofeo had a price tag of $119,000, a notable contrast to the Levante Trofeo we evaluated previously, priced closer to $190,000. In comparison, the Grecale Trofeo represents exceptional value for its performance and features. Now available at Maserati dealerships, it’s a model worth considering.
