Every week brings a new luxury crossover introduction. This time, Infiniti has unveiled its 2019 QX50 with a fresh appearance, situated on a new foundation, and featuring the brand’s latest, adjustable compression ratio engine—the world’s premier production vehicle to be equipped with such technology.

The 2.0-liter VC-Turbo engine from Infiniti delivers 268-horsepower, a usual output for turbocharged four-cylinders, along with 280 lb-ft and 27 miles per gallon, figures in torque and efficiency that align more with those of a four-cylinder diesel engine. This achievement is made possible by the utilization of variable compression ratios. Through a multi-link system that mechanically adjusts piston reach, the engine can continuously modify its compression ratio from an energetic 8:1 to a economical 14:1.

“The advent of variable compression ratio technology is a notable advancement in powertrain development,” remarked Infiniti VP Randy Parker. “Equipped with our VC-Turbo, the QX50 stands as the inaugural production vehicle to present drivers with an engine that transforms dynamically, setting a new standard for powertrain proficiency and sophistication.”

In accordance with the concept of continuously variable ratios, power is transferred to the wheels via a CVT. When compared to the prior V6 model, Infiniti claims enhancements in fuel efficiency of 35 percent for front-wheel drive and 30 percent for all-wheel drive. The fresh QX50 is reported to be 23 percent more rigid in torsional strength than its predecessor.

Serving as an alternative to models like the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Mercedes-Benz GLC, the 2019 Infiniti QX50 is anticipated to debut in the mid $30,000s.
