The fusion of Rimac and Bugatti is now finalized, just four months following its announcement in July 2021. After Rimac initiated collaboration with Porsche, a fellow member of the Volkwagen Group, the merger of these two carmakers has progressed, promising undisclosed outcomes in the future. In the interim, certain adjustments are expected.

Primarily, Bugatti will remain headquartered in Molsheim, France, with all vehicle production operations continuing there. Similarly, Rimac automobiles will persist in being manufactured in Zagreb, Croatia. Both entities will uphold their distinct brand identities. The focus of the recent press release centers around reassignments and leadership structures.

In terms of personnel, the new joint venture will employ 435 individuals, with 300 stationed in Zagreb, Croatia. The remaining 135 staff members will operate from Molsheim, and an additional 180 roles are slated for incorporation at Volkwagen’s headquarters in Wolfsburg.

Changes in executive roles are underway as Stephan Winkelmann, Bugatti’s president since early 2018, will not be part of the newly established company. He is transitioning to focus on leading Lamborghini. Christophe Piochon, currently serving as Bugatti’s managing director of production and logistics, will succeed him in addition to assuming the role of COO at the rebranded Bugatti Rimac entity, reporting to the new CEO, Mate Rimac.

Porsche is closely monitoring the developments within the new company and the trajectory of Rimac, its youthful CEO. Holding 45% of the shares, the German automaker has Rimac owning the remaining 55%. Porsche’s chairman, Oliver Blume, and deputy chairman, Lutz Meschke, also sit on the supervisory board.

The merger reflects an initiative to collaborate on knowledge, technology, and brand essence. Blume emphasized, “Bugatti symbolizes allure and passion, while Rimac represents innovation and technical prowess. Collectively, they establish a formidable automotive entity,” adding, “This partnership serves as an optimal solution for all stakeholders involved.”

As for the visible impact of this collaboration on brand identity, the extent of Rimac’s presence in Bugattis or vice versa remains to be seen. Nonetheless, it implies a likelihood of hybrid Bugatti models, with an electric Bugatti almost certain. Observers will have front-row seats to witness the dynamics as a 33-year-old assumes leadership of one of the most esteemed automotive brands.

Exciting developments lie ahead.
