The latest generation of the BMW 1 Series has been unveiled, yet it will not be available in the U.S. market, much like the previous hatchback model it succeeds. This is unfortunate, as many enthusiasts consider this new 1 Series one of the most visually appealing BMWs in recent years, featuring a more understated grille, an attractive rear design, and an overall user-friendly shape.

The M135 xDrive variant essentially functions as a high-performance hot hatch, boasting a 300-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This engine channels power to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, allowing it to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in just 4.9 seconds. For comparison, the 312-hp X1 M35i crossover sold in the U.S. achieves 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. Distinct features that showcase its sporty nature include quad exhaust tips, 19-inch wheels, and a red stripe on the steering wheel.

In contrast, the entry-level 120 model features a 170-hp three-cylinder engine, reaching 62 mph in 7.8 seconds. The four-cylinder 120d diesel version offers 163 hp and also hits 62 mph in 7.9 seconds. All variants are equipped with standard 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

To enhance its hot hatch credentials, BMW has made the new 1 Series more rigid, incorporating “highly preloaded” anti-roll bar mounts and advanced shock absorber technology. The front-wheel caster angle has been increased by 20%, providing improved stability and steering feedback.

A notable design detail is the kidney grille, which comes with vertical and diagonal bars on standard models, while the M135 features horizontal bars.

Despite the evident appeal, U.S. consumers have shown a limited interest in such compact cars, raising questions about their profitability for manufacturers. However, BMW has recently shifted its stance on similar vehicles, planning to introduce the M5 Touring to the U.S. market, following years of restrictions. This change comes in light of the successes of competitors like Audi’s RS6 Avant and Mercedes-AMG’s E63 Wagon.

Considering the current market’s demand for premium sport compacts, there is a strong argument for making the M135 available in the United States..
