Jeep is set to unveil an electric restomod kit at the upcoming 2022 SEMA auto show in November, showcasing a potential glimpse into the future of retrofit kits for off-roading. The Jeep CJ Surge Concept transforms a classic Wrangler (resembling a CJ6) through significant modifications, including an electric powertrain swap and extensive visual enhancements. This could signify the future direction of off-road retromods.
The significant upgrade lies under the vehicle’s hood. Jeep has replaced the traditional inline-six engine with an electric crate motor. This motor, a 400-volt, 200 kW (equivalent to 268 horsepower) electric drive module, transmits its power through a two-speed transfer case to all four wheels. To power this electric powertrain, the CJ Surge Concept is equipped with 24 lithium-ion batteries located beneath the rear passenger floor, enclosed within a custom shell. Due to spatial limitations in older Jeep models, the range may be restricted; however, this powertrain delivers a power output comparable to that of a new V6 Wrangler, without the associated emissions.
