Attention everyone: Brace yourselves for the return of the Honda Prelude. Last night, Honda surprised the automotive world by unveiling the Prelude Concept at the Japan Mobility Show. This new Prelude is expected to be a sleek two-door hybrid successor to the classic coupe. While details are sparse and Honda is keeping most information confidential, we do know that it will feature both an electric motor and an internal-combustion engine, embodying the modern essence of what a new Prelude should look like.

Toshihiro Mibe, the President of Honda, was seen standing beside the concept in the photo above. Although specific details about the vehicle were not disclosed, Mibe referred to it as both a new sports car and a precursor to upcoming electric enthusiast models. In his remarks at the show, Mibe stated, “In order to provide the unique ‘joy of driving’ that only Honda can bring, we are actively progressing with development. Therefore, have high expectations for this model.”

With Honda withholding powertrain and chassis specifications, the performance capabilities of the Prelude remain unclear. The announcement of this coupe coincides with reports indicating that Honda has abandoned plans with General Motors to jointly develop a platform for affordable small electric vehicles. Consequently, it seems that a balance between accessibility and sportiness will characterize the Prelude as a hybrid offering, at least for now.

While there are still many unknown factors, the visible aspects of the concept are truly impressive. The proportions of the concept are nearly flawless, with a sharp and low front end, sleek headlights that seamlessly blend with the grille, and a sporty little spoiler. Most importantly, the Prelude appears to be a practical sports car design rather than an unrealistic concept with no consideration for real-world viability. At this stage, the coupe seems ready for production, giving hope that Honda is committed enough to bring the project to fruition.

With Mibe encouraging high expectations, it seems reasonable to be cautiously optimistic about the possibility of seeing an electric Prelude sports car on the roads in the near future. Kudos to Honda for striving to preserve affordable sports cars in the age of electrification.

Update: Oct. 25, 2023, 5:35 p.m. ET: An earlier version of the article misidentified the Honda Prelude Concept as a fully electric vehicle. American Honda representative Andrew Quillin clarified earlier today that the Prelude is actually a hybrid with both gas and electric capabilities. This clarification has been incorporated into the article.
