The lack of an internal combustion engine has spurred considerable innovation in electric vehicle design, not just limited to spacious front trunks. For instance, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 boasts impressive spatial capabilities, featuring a flat front-row floor and adaptable rear seats. The recently revealed electric Ram 1500 Revolution Concept aims to reshape the way long, narrow objects are transported. This vehicle can accommodate items up to 18 feet in length—essentially the entire span of the truck—without requiring a trailer or deck rack.
This unique feature is made possible by the cab’s accessibility from both the front and the rear. It includes a secret hatch leading into the cab, beneath the central console, through the powered midgate, all the way to the far end of the bed extender mechanism. “We’ve integrated a trapdoor on the firewall and designed a hole in the console for it to pass through,” revealed Stellantis’ design chief, Ralph Gilles, speaking with The Drive.
While this concept is intriguing, our in-house Truck Editor, Caleb Jacobs, has reservations about its potential transition to a production model of the electric Ram.
“I enjoy challenging my engineers,” quipped Gilles. “The Ram REV introduces a plethora of ideas—we brainstormed numerous concepts, considering the various customer demands. The truck is a melting pot of ideas. I won’t definitively select which ideas will come to fruition, but all are under scrutiny, development, and in many cases, patented.”
Early glimpses of the interior suggest that the trap door may not be overly spacious, limiting its practicality to slender items, such as extra-long pieces of timber or perhaps skis tailored for giants.
