  • A new electric model to replace the 718 Boxster and Cayman will make its debut this year, with production scheduled to begin in 2025

It’s a mere couple of years, a brief reprieve before bidding adieu to some of the most beloved gas-powered Porsches.

Announced on Monday, Porsche informed Reuters that the production of the gasoline-powered Macan crossover SUV will come to a halt in 2026. As for the gasoline-powered 718 Boxster and Cayman, their production will cease sometime in 2025.

Both these models will be substituted with their electric counterparts. Porsche board member Albrecht Reimold shared with Reuters that the platforms for the gasoline-powered models have reached the end of their life cycles.

The electric Porsche Macan has already hit the market, priced at $80,450 for the base Macan 4 version. The higher-grade Macan Turbo is available at $106,950. These prices include a $1,650 destination charge. Comparatively, the current gasoline-powered Macan base model costs $63,895 with a $1,995 destination charge.

Sales of the gasoline-powered Macan have already ceased in Europe; however, the top-seller in the United States will continue for two more model years as the company boosts production of the electric vehicle.

In 2023, Porsche was contemplating the discontinuation of the gasoline-powered Macan due to shifting market preferences towards electric vehicles, despite the strong sales figures of the gasoline-powered model in the U.S.

The electric 718 Boxster and Cayman replacement has been gradually revealing itself during public road testing. This electric sports car was showcased through the Porsche Mission R concept at the 2021 Munich auto show.

The introduction of the electric 718 Boxster and Cayman replacement is anticipated later this year, with production set to commence in 2025.

Similar to the electric Macan, the electric 718 is projected to be based on a designated EV platform, possibly the same one that supported the Mission R, with a battery layout resembling a T-shape filling the center tunnel and rear section. This layout mirrors that of the batteries in the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore.
