  • A transformation turns the Hummer H1 into an electric SUV known as the Cyber-Hummer
  • The Cyber-Hummer utilizes Tesla powertrain elements for 1,000 hp
  • Cyber-Hummers are priced at $98,900 and are estimated to offer around 300 miles of range

This week, a Canadian EV conversion workshop revealed its intention to develop an electric Hummer utilizing Tesla parts.

North American Electric Vehicles (NAEV) plans to acquire former military Humvees—the vehicles that were once marketed as the original civilian Hummer H1—and fit them with pre-owned Tesla powertrains to form what they are calling the Cyber-Hummer.

The initial variant from NAEV, known as the Executive Edition, features a dual-motor all-wheel drive system that delivers an alleged 1,000 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque, enabling acceleration from 0-60 mph in just 2.5 seconds. A 75-kwh battery pack is projected to provide a range of up to 300 miles, with the company mentioning its support for both CCS and NACS quick charging points.

In addition to utilizing pre-owned Tesla parts, NAEV procures its Humvees from surplus auctions. The conversion process involves the extraction of internal combustion-related components like the transmission, fuel system, and exhaust system, as well as the transfer case, geared hubs, and original cast-iron suspension parts.

The elimination of these components contributes to reducing the curb weight to an estimated 4,500 pounds. This weight is approximately 2,000 pounds lighter than the least heavy factory-produced Hummer H1 and about half the weight of a new GMC Hummer EV. The decreased curb weight also enables the Cyber-Hummer to be classified as a Class 1 vehicle for road use, although it won’t offer the same level of luxury as a Hummer EV.

The original suspension system is exchanged for what NAEV terms a “hybrid” independent suspension setup that includes some new internal components and some obtained from Tesla. NAEV asserts that the new configuration provides 15 inches of ground clearance and equips the Cyber-Hummer Executive Edition with all-terrain tires mounted on 20-inch alloy wheels.

The Executive Edition is tagged at $139,900; however, NAEV also intends to introduce Baja and Commander versions at a price point of $98,900 and $119,900, respectively. Production time takes around six months post-order placement, and NAEV aims to produce 328 vehicles annually.
