Audi revealed its presumed final model featuring the renowned naturally aspirated V10 engine: the Audi R8 Coupe V10 GT RWD. Limited to just 333 units worldwide, this model is rear-wheel-drive and boasts a 612-horsepower variant of the 5.2-liter V10 engine. While Audi isn’t typically associated with rear-wheel-drive vehicles, the new R8 GT takes the title of being the most potent RWD Audi ever produced.
Surpassing even the all-wheel-drive non-GT R8 by 10 horsepower, the “regular” RWD R8 Performance, serving as its foundation, only delivers 562 hp. Add to that a weight reduction of 44 pounds, and the GT can reach 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 199 mph. Unfortunately, Audi’s documentation confirms that this model marks the “goodbye to the V10,” indicating that the succeeding generation of the R8 may no longer feature the iconic 10-cylinder engine.
The GT debuts a new “Torque Rear” driving mode that allows for precise adjustment of stability control, facilitating “controlled and precise oversteer.” Essentially, a drift mode is expected. The steering wheel features a switch to modify seven levels of slip.
Further enhancing performance, the new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission delivers faster shifts and utilizes varied ratios for improved acceleration. The R8 GT package includes lightweight forged 20-inch wheels, optional Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires, standard ceramic brakes, bucket seats, and a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic front anti-roll bar. Additionally, an optional adjustable coil-over suspension is available, complete with dedicated tools and adjustment guidelines.
From a design perspective, the car is distinguished by glossy carbon aero components, a black intake manifold, black emblems, and striking red seat belts.
The Audi R8 Coupe V10 GT RWD is slated for release in 2023 and is priced at around $221,000 in European markets.
