The Korean automaker Hyundai has experienced a significant design transformation under the leadership of SangYup Lee, who joined the company from Bentley in 2016. His designs, from the new Sonata to the Tucson and the striking N Vision 74 Concept, are not only eye-catching but also evoke a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of the future imagined in the 1980s.

During the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, Lee revealed that the unique transparent radio antenna on the Ioniq 6 was inspired by a design reminiscent of Apple’s iconic transparent iMac from the 1990s.

“The design of the Ioniq 6 is deliberately distinct. While most antennas are body-colored or black, the Ioniq 6 stands out. The streamlined roofline and pixel lights embody our brand’s nostalgic yet digitally-forward character,” explained Lee. “This design concept is akin to the original Apple iMac.”

The 2023 Ioniq 6 boasts a range of up to 340 miles in select trims, along with a dual-motor setup delivering up to 320 horsepower. There will also be a single motor, rear-drive variant with 149 hp and a 55-kW battery. Equipped with an 800-volt architecture supporting rapid charging up to 350 kW, the Ioniq 6 can recharge from 10% to 80% capacity in under 20 minutes.

Hyundai plans to release the Ioniq 6 in the spring, but pricing details have not been disclosed yet. The initial versions to be launched remain uncertain, but one thing that’s definite is the unique transparent radio antenna design.
