Jeep Unveils Its First Fully Electric Vehicle: The Wagoneer S

Jeep has officially launched its first fully electric vehicle (EV), the Wagoneer S, which features two rows and five seats. Contrary to expectations, it is not an electric Wrangler. The Wagoneer S is seen as a production version of the luxury SUV previously hinted at with a concept revealed earlier this year, often dubbed the “American Range Rover.” With a powerful output of 600 horsepower, a price tag starting at $71,995 for the Launch Edition, and an estimated range exceeding 300 miles, Jeep is placing significant bets on this luxury EV. Production will occur at the Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico, alongside the Compass.

After reintroducing the "Wagoneer" as a sub-brand only two years ago, Jeep has opted to rebrand the Wagoneer S as a Jeep vehicle. This decision stems from the challenges of launching sub-brands without an established dealer network.

Exterior Design of the Wagoneer S

The design of the Wagoneer S strikes a balance between the Grand Cherokee and the Range Rover Velar, with a hint of the Fisker Ocean in its profile. The front carries the iconic seven-slot grille, establishing its Jeep identity, although the overall appearance may come off as somewhat nondescript among a sea of electric crossovers. A notable feature is the rear three-quarter angle, showcasing a full-width wing that extends back, enhancing aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of 0.29.

Performance and Technology

The Wagoneer S is capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, thanks to its robust 617 lb-ft of electric torque. Charging is designed to be efficient as well, with Jeep claiming that the 100-kwh battery can be charged from 20% to 80% in just 23 minutes when using a DC fast charger that supports 158 kW output.

As a standard feature, the Wagoneer S comes with four-wheel drive, facilitated by three electric drive modules. These modules intelligently disengage the front wheels during light loads and highway driving, allowing the vehicle to function more as a rear-wheel drive for better efficiency on highways.

Interior Features of the Wagoneer S

Inside, the Wagoneer S boasts an impressive 45 inches of digital screens, which include a 12.3-inch center display powered by Stellantis’ Uconnect 5 system and a 10-inch heads-up display. This high-tech interior is accentuated with mood lighting and is designed for seamless user interaction through physical controls for audio and a rotary gear selection.

The sound system, a remarkable 19-speaker, 1200-watt McIntosh setup, has been tailored specifically for the Wagoneer S, promising an exceptional audio experience. It is also equipped with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction control system, offering different driving modes like Sport, Eco, Snow, and Sand.

Weighing in at 5,667 pounds, the Wagoneer S can tow a maximum of 3,400 pounds. Its approach, breakover, and departure angles are measured at 19.2, 14.0, and 23.4 degrees, respectively.

The Wagoneer S Trailhawk Concept

Jeep has introduced a concept version called the Wagoneer S Trailhawk, featuring unique front and rear fascia, cladding, a roof rack, and a three-inch lift. This concept, inspired by Jeep’s Easter Safari builds, showcases the brand’s commitment to off-road capability. While currently only a concept, it hints at potential future offerings based on market trends.

Availability and Pricing

The Wagoneer S Launch Edition is set to hit the market in the U.S. and Canada this fall, with a starting price of $71,995. By prioritizing a luxury crossover for its first fully-electric offering instead of a Wrangler, Jeep is making a bold statement. If subsequent models are able to maintain similar luxury and performance without the high cost, this strategy might prove to be a successful one.
