  • Expected to arrive in 2024, the Hyundai Ioniq 9 will be a three-row electric SUV
  • Sharing its platform, powertrain, and packaging with the Kia EV9, the Ioniq 9 will hit the market
  • Displaying alongside the three-row Palisade in dealer showrooms will be the Hyundai Ioniq 9

Hyundai has officially confirmed the debut of their electric three-row crossover SUV later this year.

The debut schedule was disclosed in a press release outlining modifications to Hyundai’s lineup for the 2025 model year. The fresh electric crossover will also bear the label of a 2025 model; nevertheless, Hyundai refrained from specifying the lead time for its U.S. arrival post-launch.

The vehicle was previously spotted undergoing tests earlier this year and was heralded in 2020 at the launch of the Ioniq EV sub-brand. Its initial glimpse was presented via the Hyundai Seven concept showcased at the 2021 Los Angeles auto exhibition.

While the name is yet to be officially ratified, “Hyundai Ioniq 7” appears to be the frontrunner, influenced by the choice of the name “Seven” for the concept edition. Alternatively, the nomenclature of Hyundai Ioniq 9 holds potential, aligning with the Kia EV9, anticipated to share a modified version of the E-GMP dedicated EV platform.

Irrespective of its final title, the three-row crossover anticipates a size comparable to prevailing midsize SUVs, like Hyundai’s Palisade. However, the benefits in packaging from the E-GMP platform indicate interior spaciousness nearer to that of a full-size SUV. While the Seven concept showcased a 126.0-inch wheelbase, spy images hint at a probable slight reduction in the production model, conceivably close to the EV9’s 122.0 inches.

Details on the powertrain of the new three-row electric crossover remain undisclosed by Hyundai, yet it’s probable that they will mirror those of the EV9. The Kia variant boasts a base 76.1-kwh battery pack and a single-motor, rear-wheel drive set-up, with the additional option of a 99.8-kwh pack and rear-wheel or dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations. The bigger pack combined with rear-wheel drive ensures a rated range of 304 miles as per EPA estimates.

Genesis is exploring an all-electric GV90, previewed by the recently unveiled Genesis Neolun concept, which might also share connections with Hyundai and Kia’s three-row electric crossovers. However, the GV90 is not expected to make its debut until 2026.
