It’s time to welcome the latest iteration of Mercedes’ iconic grand tourers. Introducing the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT, which has retained the qualities that have always made it exceptional, such as its handcrafted turbocharged V8 engine. However, this time around, it is equipped with a new back seat, a plethora of tested performance technologies, and even integrated track driving tutorials.

Expected to arrive at U.S. dealerships in the first half of the upcoming year, the second-generation AMG GT is constructed using a new body framework that incorporates aluminum, magnesium, steel, and composite materials strategically placed. This allows Mercedes to introduce more storage space and optional two-plus-two seating, a feature that the company claims is now available due to customer requests.

Both are enveloped with significantly enhanced suspension. The AMG GT boasts a multilink coil suspension at the front and rear, utilizing robust forged aluminum components, enhanced with hydraulic roll control and adaptive damping. Additionally, an optional front-axle lift can elevate the long front end by 1.2 inches.

The front end houses an upgraded variant of AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, now equipped with a new oil pan, a relocated intercooler, redesigned cylinder heads, and improved emission equipment. It will be offered in two configurations across the GT 55 and GT 63 models, with the latter producing a robust 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque.

Transmitting power through a nine-speed multi-clutch automatic gearbox, this power is channeled through a rear-biased all-wheel-drive setup with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. Collectively, the GT 63 accelerates from zero to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 196 mph, electronically capped. As for the GT 55, it accomplishes the same in 3.8 seconds with a maximum speed of 183 mph.

To reach those speeds, the AMG GT utilizes active aerodynamics, featuring adjustable front flaps and a rear spoiler. These can be complemented by an optional aerodynamics kit to enhance downforce further. Its aluminum-caliper brakes support torque vectoring, which, combined with standard four-wheel steering, enhances maneuverability. The AMG GT is equipped with standard 20-inch alloy wheels that can be upgraded to 21-inch wheels.

The interior of the vehicle will offer various configurations, most featuring luxurious Nappa leather upholstery. Expect a heated flat-bottomed Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel, ambient lighting, seats with ventilated backrests, and an optional massage function. The seat bolsters are electronically adjustable depending on different driving modes, some of which are undoubtedly tailored for track performance.

Over there, the AMG GT has the ability to record its own telemetry, which will be shown on its 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. An optional head-up display can present lap and sector times, and even offer virtual driving guidance that suggests braking points and specific racing trajectories. Switching driving modes is done through capacitive touch controls—an unfortunate feature carried over from the previous model—while other functions can be adjusted via the 11.9-inch touchscreen. Various ADAS and safety technologies will also be integrated, although Mercedes has stated that the AMG GT will not come with its Level 3 autonomous driving features.

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT is set to hit the market in the first half of the upcoming year, heralding the arrival of more high-performance models. It’s quite thrilling to think about a potential new Black Series and envision it competing head-to-head with vehicles like the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD. However, that duel will have to wait for another occasion.
