The 2024 edition of the GMC Sierra AT4X receives an enhanced power source for the upcoming model year. Previously exclusively equipped with GM’s 6.2-liter V8 engine, it now boasts the Duramax diesel powerplant as its standard offering. This strategic change aims to capture the admiration of diesel engine enthusiasts.
Revised for the 2023 update, the 3.0-liter Duramax engine now delivers 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque. These figures represent a 10% and 7.6% increase respectively compared to the 2022 models. The power enhancement is attributed to the incorporation of new steel pistons, injectors, and an enhanced turbo compressor wheel. GM has also upgraded the engine’s temperature control features to maintain optimal functionality. Initially introduced in select 2023 Sierra 1500 models, it’s now a standard feature on the AT4X trim.
The Duramax diesel engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission in the AT4X, similar to the V8 setup. With substantial torque surpassing that of the gas engine, it’s an excellent option for towing requirements. With 95% of peak torque accessible at just 1,250 rpm, it provides ample power at low speeds for demanding off-road conditions as well. Additionally, the diesel’s superior fuel efficiency ensures the AT4X can go further, making it perfect for overlanding adventures.
“The 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine has always been a favored choice among Sierra light-duty owners,” said Will Mellon, GMC Sierra’s marketing manager. Noting that 20% of Sierra 1500 sales have included the Duramax engine, he anticipates a further increase with the AT4X model. While the gasoline V8 remains available, it’s now an optional feature moving forward.
The decision for the Sierra AT4X to embrace diesel power shouldn’t come as a surprise. Following the lead of the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2, the off-road version of Chevy’s flagship pickup will also offer the Duramax engine alongside the existing 6.2-liter gasoline V8. This upgrade primarily enhances functional capabilities, as previously analyzed.
This transition is accompanied by a range of other enhancements across the Sierra 1500 lineup. The Denali, Denali Ultimate, AT4, and AT4X will all receive new features. Owners can opt for new power retractable steps and an active exhaust option, which will also be available on the SLT model. Two fresh wheel designs will also be introduced. Interestingly, GMC has introduced two new “unique and striking” exterior colors: Downpour Metallic and Thunderstorm Gray. Subdued neutrals on a truck? Innovative.
