The Chevrolet Trax is affordable, modern, and completely redesigned for the 2024 model year. It’s rapidly gaining popularity among budget-conscious buyers, with impressive performance in the sales charts during its inaugural sales year.
Starting below $25,000 for all trims, the Trax’s strong sales come as no surprise. Reviewing GM’s Q3 sales data for this year reveals some intriguing figures. The standout among them is the Trax’s quarterly results, showing a 498% increase compared to Q3 of the previous year. This number might be somewhat deceiving, as the sales in the previous year were restricted due to the discontinuation of the last-generation Trax by the end of the 2022 model year. Nonetheless, with 37,869 units sold in Q3, it currently ranks as Chevrolet’s third best-selling vehicle, following the Silverado and Equinox.
Indeed, the Trax has been enjoying strong sales since its launch in Q2 this year, accumulating a total of 65,255 units. This surpasses the combined sales of 42,590 units in 2021 and 26,597 units in 2022. The Trax’s peak year was in 2019, with 116,816 units sold. If the current sales pace continues throughout a complete year, it has the potential to surpass that all-time record. In an interesting comparison, Chevrolet sold more Trax units in Q3 than the total combined sales of all Cadillac models, with the luxury brand moving 35,638 units in the same quarter.
The success of the Trax coincides with GM’s achievements in the compact SUV segment. The 2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer is having its best sales year yet for the current generation model, while the Buick Encore GX achieved its highest-ever Q3 sales with 20,060 units delivered. GM is also closely monitoring the sales performance of the 2024 Buick Envista, which saw 5,385 units delivered in its first quarter.
The Trax stands out by contradicting the current trend in the U.S. market, where lower-priced vehicles are rapidly declining. Models like the Mitsubishi Mirage, Kia Rio, and Nissan Versa all registered under 30,000 units in sales for 2022, with some of these models set to be phased out in the upcoming years. Many economical models are reaching the end of their lifecycle, becoming less attractive over time as consumers demand more advanced features and amenities. This shift is partly due to automakers’ reluctance to invest further in these budget-oriented brands.
The widespread appeal of the new Trax is easily understandable due to its competitive pricing and contemporary features. Chevrolet is optimistic that it will continue to attract customers away from other economy models as competitors exit the lower end of the market.
