It has been well established that the 2022 GMC Hummer EV is a heavyweight, tipping the scales at approximately 9,000 pounds. A significant portion of this weight can be traced back to its enormous battery, and new information sheds light on just how hefty that battery really is. Documents submitted by General Motors to the EPA, later highlighted by Car and Driver, reveal that the battery pack known as the Ultium weighs an impressive 2,923 pounds.
To put that into perspective, the Ultium battery weighs about 600 pounds more than a new Mazda MX-5 Miata. This measurement pertains to the high-end pack found in the Hummer EV Edition 1, which offers a usable capacity of 212.7 kilowatt-hours. The documents also confirm the total curb weight of the vehicle at 9,063 pounds, indicating that over 32 percent of the truck’s total mass is attributed to the battery.
Given these figures, it’s clear why the Hummer EV is 2,500 pounds heavier than the Ford F-150 Lightning, another electric truck that is not particularly lightweight itself. When considering the Hummer’s tri-motor setup versus the Lightning’s dual-motor configuration, it becomes easier to understand the source of the added weight. Nonetheless, the sheer size of the Hummer remains astonishing.
Despite its bulk, the Hummer EV boasts impressive power. The chief engineer of the vehicle mentioned that it could previously perform wheelies before adjustments were made. The electric truck accelerates from zero to 60 miles per hour in about three seconds, which is quite remarkable, especially with a starting price of $110,295.
Thanks to the substantial capacity of the Ultium battery, the Hummer EV reportedly delivers a range of 329 miles on a single charge. While this range is similar to what other electric vehicles achieve with smaller batteries, it’s important to note that those vehicles do not contend with nearly as much weight. The Hummer registers a combined efficiency of 47 MPGe—a metric that may not seem comprehensive, particularly when compared to the Chevy Bolt EV’s impressive 120 MPGe combined rating.
Ultimately, potential buyers of the Hummer EV are unlikely to prioritize its efficiency rating. What they will find compelling are its outstanding performance figures, as the Hummer surpasses nearly every other vehicle in its class on a pound-for-pound basis, which is quite a feat.
