At the New York Auto Show on Wednesday, Acura introduced its new A-Spec trim for the MDX crossover. This update features a variety of dark trim elements, smoked wheels, and some race-inspired interior details, though not much else.
This simplicity might be advantageous, particularly since the MDX is reportedly the best-selling three-row luxury SUV of all time. As noted by Honda America’s senior vice president, Henio Arcangeli Jr., “This MDX A-Spec adds a sporty, aggressive, and youthful appeal that will attract new buyers to the best-selling three-row luxury SUV of all time.” The philosophy seems to be, if it’s not broken, why fix it?
The 2019 MDX A-Spec is characterized by cosmetic enhancements, giving it a look reminiscent of an angsty teenager with a penchant for dark style. With its black cladding, 20-inch Shark Grey wheels, aggressive front design, and dark chrome accents on the headlights, grille, and window frames, this Acura aims for a bold appearance.
Inside, this goth-inspired MDX is equipped with Alcantara sport seats available in red, red contrast stitching, and special red-lit gauges. Adding to the sporty feel are sport pedals, carbon fiber trim on the center console, and a thicker steering wheel complete with paddle shifters.
The 2019 Acura MDX A-Spec is exclusively paired with the brand’s torque vectoring Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system. Although some might wish for actual performance upgrades on the A-Spec trim, a proper Type-S MDX featuring high-performance technology from the NSX could prove to be a thrilling option. Given the current demand for luxury SUVs, such a model could make business sense.
