On Thursday, Fiat-Chrysler unveiled that all Fiat 500 models will now be turbocharged. The entire 2018 500 lineup will showcase a standard 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine, generating 33% more horsepower than its predecessors.
The Pop and Lounge trims of the 500 will experience a power increase to 135-hp and 150 pound-feet of torque, courtesy of the new turbo system, dual intercoolers, and sport exhaust setup. Additional enhancements comprise a standard sport suspension, performance braking mechanism, and 16-inch wheels.
These two trims will also feature various visual modifications, such as “turbo” badges, color-matching front/rear fascias, illuminated door sills, fog lights, backup camera, and a rear hatch spoiler. Additionally, Fiat has introduced three new exterior colors—Vesuvio Black Pearl, Mezzanotte Blue Pearl, and Brillante Red.
“Having an entirely turbocharged collection, the iconic Fiat 500 now provides a more energetic driving experience and superior standard horsepower compared to its rivals,” stated Steve Beahm, FCA’s Head of Passenger Car Brands.
No further performance enhancements will be applied to the already-turbocharged 500 Abarth variant, maintaining its existing 160-hp and 183 pound-feet of torque figures. It upholds its distinctive dual exhaust mechanism carefully tuned by Abarth, performance suspension, and an advanced torque transfer control system that optimizes throttle response when cornering. Moreover, new Abarth owners will receive a complimentary track session at the Bob Bondurant School of Racing.
The 2019 Fiat 500L minivan and 500X crossover will also come equipped with the 1.4-liter turbo engine. Additionally, these models have undergone styling and technological updates for the upcoming model year.
The lone member of the 500 family that won’t be updated with the new engine is the all-electric 500e, capable of traveling 84 miles on a single electric charge.
Beginning this month, you can place an order for a 2018 Fiat 500, with deliveries scheduled for the second quarter of 2018.
