Tesla recently announced through its social media channels that its China operations have reached a significant milestone with the production of its 3 millionth vehicle. This achievement highlights the critical role that Chinese manufacturing plays in Tesla’s overall operations. This announcement follows the recent news that Tesla recorded over 6 million total sales of the Model 3 and Model Y during the third quarter.

To detail further, the combined sales of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y reached 6,021,007 units by the end of September. With China now surpassing the 3-million-unit milestone shortly thereafter, it is evident that almost 50% of all Model 3 and Model Y electric cars ever made have come from China.

3 million Tesla Vehicles Porduced China

The production growth rate in China may be outpacing that of the US and Europe combined. Observers are eager to see if the Shanghai factory will hit 4 million vehicles produced before the cumulative sales of the Model 3 and Model Y reach 8 million.

A few days ago, Tesla Vice President Grace Tao shared the news on Weibo, highlighting that the journey from producing 2 million vehicles to 3 million in China happened significantly faster than the earlier leap from zero to 1 million. “Today we unveiled the Robotaxi driverless taxi, and here is another piece of good news: The Shanghai Super Factory has reached a new milestone — the production of its 3 millionth vehicle,” she wrote. “The Tesla Shanghai Super Factory took 32 months to reach 1 million vehicles and only 13 months to go from 2 million to 3 million. Each vehicle represents progress; 3 million marks a substantial achievement,” she added in her Weibo post.

It’s important to note that Tesla produces vehicles in China not solely for the domestic market. “It also serves as Tesla’s main vehicle export center, having exported 1 million vehicles by late September 2024 to regions such as Europe, Asia, and countries including Australia and New Zealand,” Teslarati explains.

This represents remarkable progress. In contrast, skeptics previously suggested that the site of the Shanghai Tesla factory would amount to little more than a muddy field. The developments speak volumes about the transformation that has taken place!
