Demand for General Motors’ pickup trucks may have decreased in 2019, but that has not deterred aspiring drivers from envisioning themselves in a new Silverado or Sierra HD. This is evidenced by the recent arrest of two teenagers who allegedly stole pickup trucks valued at $640,000 from a GM holding lot adjacent to the assembly plant in Flint, Michigan.
According to reports from ABC12, Genesee County law enforcement was alerted on a Sunday morning when bystanders observed multiple brand-new Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups being driven away from an overflow lot. Shortly thereafter, GM’s OnStar system also notified the police, reporting that one of the trucks had been involved in an accident just moments after leaving the lot, prompting their emergency response.
When officers arrived at the accident site, they found one of the stolen trucks had crashed into the drive-thru ATM of a nearby credit union, likely in an attempt to steal cash.
Simultaneously, OnStar contacted authorities again to inform them that one of the stolen vehicles had been located in a wooded area near an elementary school. Police converged on the location and discovered six additional trucks hidden in the woods. Rather than fleeing with the trucks, the suspects reportedly exited the running vehicles upon seeing the patrol cars and escaped on foot and bicycles.
Lt. Dave Kaiser of the Michigan State Police stated, “Upon seeing the patrol cars, several individuals jumped out of the running vehicles and fled.” A police perimeter was quickly established in response.
While law enforcement managed to apprehend only one suspect at the scene, a second individual was later arrested when authorities recovered the eight stolen trucks.
Notably, both suspects are minors. Although police have not disclosed their identities, they confirmed that the arrested teens are 14 and 15 years old. More arrests are anticipated. Both individuals face nine charges, including unlawfully driving away in an automobile, safe cracking, and malicious destruction of property valued over $20,000.
Reports indicate that each truck is worth approximately $80,000, contributing to a total estimated value of over half a million dollars for all eight vehicles.
