The GMC Syclone stands out as one of the most striking and unique pickup trucks ever produced in America. Filled with the unmistakable spirit of the ’90s, it features a turbocharged V6 engine that delivers 280 horsepower, allowing it to distribute power to all four wheels and outpace even exotic supercars on both city streets and drag strips. After the 1991 model year—technically marking its end—the Syclone made way for its sibling, the Blazer-bodied Typhoon, and has remained highly coveted ever since. Now, Specialty Vehicle Engineering (SVE) is bringing the Syclone concept back to life with a modern twist by launching a revamped model based on the 2019 GMC Canyon, equipped with a supercharged V6 engine that generates an impressive 455 horsepower.

In reverence to the original supertruck, the new Syclone, built by SVE, will feature a notably lowered suspension, with a two-inch drop at the front and a five-inch drop at the rear, along with significant cosmetic enhancements compared to the standard model. According to a press release, the trucks will come in the factory’s color options and will be available in an extended-cab format, as GMC currently does not produce a single-cab version of the Canyon. Unlike its predecessor, these new Syclones will also offer the choice of two-wheel drive, although four-wheel drive remains an available option.

Considering the massive output from the truck’s turbocharged 3.6-liter V6, having as many driven wheels as possible seems beneficial. The updated Syclone boasts 175 more horsepower than the original, and the use of supercharging is expected to make power delivery more manageable compared to the previous model’s more unpredictable turbocharging.

To handle this added power, the new Syclone is equipped with upgraded brakes featuring front slotted rotors measuring 13.6 inches in diameter, complemented by six-piston calipers for enhanced stopping performance.

For improved handling, the truck is fitted with a heavy-duty rear sway bar, traction bars, and spring bushings. New shock absorbers at both the front and rear ensure optimal ride quality and cornering stability. The Syclone rides on custom 20-inch by 9-inch alloy wheels fitted with “Y-rated performance tires,” as described by SVE.

Additionally, the new models will showcase special Syclone graphics and badging, delivering a truly nostalgic feel. Each truck will have a dashboard plaque displaying its specific build number and the 455 horsepower rating, along with Syclone decals on the doors and tailgate, capturing the essence of the ’90s era of high-top sneakers and stonewashed denim.

Production for these contemporary Syclones will be limited to just 100 units, so interested buyers should act quickly to secure their chance to own a piece of turbocharged nostalgia. However, prospective customers should be prepared to spend, as these modifications come at an added cost of $39,995, in addition to the price of a standard GMC Canyon..
