In July, Subaru achieved a new lap record at the Nürburgring with a highly modified version of the upcoming limited edition WRX STI Type RA. Now, enthusiasts can view the record-setting performance.

Subaru enlisted FIA World Endurance driver Richie Stanaway to drive the Type RA around the iconic race track, where he successfully set a new record for sedans. While this vehicle differs significantly from the Aston Martins he typically races, Stanaway exceeded expectations by completing a lap in an impressive time of 6:57.5 on his first dry run—breaking the seven-minute barrier. A previous attempt in June was hindered by rain, although it did result in captivating photos and footage. This new time is a remarkable 35 seconds quicker than the former sedan lap record held by the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.

It’s important to note that this particular car is not the same as the Type RA that will be available to the public. Instead, it features a significantly enhanced configuration that previously set a record at the Isle of Man, powered by Prodrive’s 600-horsepower WRC engine, which reinstills the iconic rally car sound into the latest WRX. Additionally, the vehicle boasts active aerodynamics, including a rear wing that can adjust on the fly to optimize for either reduced drag or up to 650 pounds of downforce as necessary. This is not a typical production car, but a specialty machine designed solely for breaking Nürburgring records.

While I trust Subaru’s claims, I would appreciate access to the complete run. This presentation provides insight into the attempt and showcases the Type RA’s impressive speed. Given Subaru’s history of releasing full-length videos of record-setting laps at the Isle of Man and Mount Washington, we can hope to see Stanaway’s extraordinary achievement of breaking the seven-minute mark soon.
